5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect book for all levels of bottled ship modelers., May 6, 1999
This review is from: Ships-In-Bottles: A Step-By-Step Guide to a Venerable Nautical Craft (Paperback)
Don Hubbard's book is an excellent reference guide for all levels of bottled ship builders. The book includes step-by-step instructions to a specific model witch teaches the novice modeler the essential skills of the craft. For the experienced modeler, Hubbard has included sections on various mast-stepping techniques and helpful tools. Tools and materials are described in detail and many of the useful tools have directions on how to make them out of normal household items. Of particular interest to me was the section on prepairing plans from a picture of a ship, giving the builder the means to build an accurate scale model of virtually any ship. The book also includes several plans for other models of various types of boats which will surely keep even the most industrious modeler busy for quite some time. Overall a supurbly written, useful and friendly companion to any ship bottler.

This review is from: Ships-In-Bottles: A Step-By-Step Guide to a Venerable Nautical Craft (Paperback)
This book is probably the most complete guide for anyone desiring to build or who builds bottleships. It contains not only the know-how of building ships-in-bottles, but provides plans for many models to build; tools to use; how to mount your model; nautical terminology; how to photograph a model; a list of the known bottleship Associations throughout the world and three pages listing the names of books in seven different languages on the subject of bottled ships and/or objects. 4.0 out of 5 stars A well written book, May 6, 2007
A well written book by a respected bottle shipwright. However as a collector of books on ships in bottles, although very good, this is far from the best. For real enthusiasts of building ships in bottles I would recommend a book called Ship Models in Glass which in my mind is the most authorative book ever written on the subject, a little pricey but well worth it.

This book was my introduction to the hobby and it has served me well. Commander Hubbard has written an inspiring and useful book.

If you have never built a ship-in-a-bottle before this book should guide you to success.

Incuded are many photographs and line drawings of completed models, tools, ship plans, etc.

While not the definitive work for the expert it is a useful guide full of information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great it seems., January 8, 2003

I have read through it and it provides a great step-by-step tutorial on building a Gloucester Schooner model in a bottle. Includes other plans as well. I haven't built a ship yet, but I have bought all of the inexpensive materials that he has suggested. Most of them I already had in my home. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Model ship builder, January 26, 2011
This review is from: Ships-In-Bottles: A Step-By-Step Guide to a Venerable Nautical Craft (Paperback)
This is a pretty good beginner's book on building ships in bottles. It is a little dated and the models are rather simple in design. For a more advanced guide, I recommend "Ship Models In Glass" by Hille and Young.

Relatively "old" (1971) but lovely book which guides you to the building of your first ship in a bottle - the gloucester schooner - and gradually moves up to more difficult projects given as plans at the very end -the schooner Yacht America, Coastal schooner, the Baltimore clipper, a brigantine, the USS Constitution and a Galleon. In total, 12 chapters:1. tools and material, 2. selecting a model to build 3. selecting and preparing the bottle 4. Shaping the hull. 5. The deck, 6. The spars and rigging, 7. The sails, 8. Placing the ship into the bottle, 9. Sealing and finishing the bottle, 10. Building a display stand, 11. preparation of plans, 12 Plans for other ship models. B/W illustrations/drawings plus B/W pictures with enough detail. I am enjoying each single page that I read. Clearly written and simple to understand.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book I learned from., May 15, 2008
I bought this book for my comprehensive ship-in-bottle book collection. I learned from an earlier edition of this book and now the author is my friend and mentor. I started out knowing NOTHING about this craft and now
less than 10 years later I find myself the first LADY President of the Ships-in-Bottles Association of America! This is a great book and highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars So ,that's how it's done!!, January 18, 2008

This is an excellent book to get you started if you ever thought you'd like to make one of those "Ships-In-Bottles".It tells you how to go about it,what materials ,tools and methods as well as "secrets"that are involved.
You will see they can be made with skills ranging from very simple to the utmost expertise and precision. The book shows how to construct a simple ship and gives plans for more complicated ones.
This would be a great gift for anyone ,young or old,who would like to start a hobby of model building.
My interests are more along the line of puzzles, and that was more what drew my attention to this book; to learn how "it was done" . The basic concept is simple ,but once understood, can be applied to as difficult model as you wish.
Just in case you are interested, placing things in bottles can be taken to very unusual levels. If you want to see some real challenges ,go search under Harry Eng Impossible Bottles, and you will be amazed at some of the things he has managed to put in bottles.Golf balls, baseballs, deck of cards in its case, a pair of sissors, sneekers, rubik's cube, etc. You'll be blown away when you see a gallon jug filled with objects all much larger than the opening. And yes, even some fancy ship models.
