Editorial Reviews

Review

Setting her clear voice in arrangements that mix traditional and modern instruments, she maintains the taut, quivering ornamentation of old ballad style, singing tales of love, war and murder with a gentle gravity. --The New York Times

Product Description

Karan Casey is one of the most influential and imitated vocalists in Irish and American folk music; a natural innovator, she proves that the ancient and the modern make excellent bedfellows. On Ships in the Forest, her fifth solo album and debut with the Compass Records Group, Casey's warm, soulful voice ebbs and flows around ballads both timely and timeless. Produced once again by Donald Shaw (of Capercaillie fame), the album was recorded at Casey's home in County Cork and features the members of her current touring band, Caoimhín Vallely (piano), Kate Ellis (cello) and Robbie Overson (guitar) along with special guests Kris Drever, Niall Vallely and Cillian Vallely.

OUTSTANDING!! Another hit from Karan Casey! We loved it when she was with Solas and was a disappointed when she left. We still love Solas and continue to support Karan's solo career. Her voice is one of the most beautiful and pure I have ever heard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elegant and Haunting, August 20, 2008

Before I bought this album, I had only heard bits and pieces from Karan Casey's myspace profile. It was enough to whet my appetite. I am so pleased with this album that it's hard to find the right words.

I am a new listener of hers having only heard her solo albums and never one by Solas, her old band. I absolutely love her voice. She is accompanied by very few instruments on this album, so her voice really shines.

The album is elegant, haunting, and sincere, not to meant powerful. Her words seep through your eardrums and will make you float. I am a fan of traditional music without a lot of modern flair. If you are too, you will love this album.

I also recommend these albums which I also own by Casey: Distant Shore, Seal Maiden: A Celtic Musical, Chasing the Sun, and The Winds Begin to Sing

5.0 out of 5 stars Understated and relevant., January 30, 2009

I've had the privilege of attending possibly five Karan Casey performances in the past 10 years. This should tell you that I am,in fact,a devotee. This woman, along with another great diva from the British Isles,June Tabor, are my preferred female vocalists.Karan Casey and June Tabor educate, entertain, and elicit emotion. This is Karan's best:austere, warm, appropriately produced, endearing, and vital.Karan wears and lives these songs.Bravo, another masterpiece from this fine interpreter of Ireland's past.
