3.0 out of 5 stars Stelton Ship's Lamp, beautiful but hard to use., February 21, 2009
This review is from: Ship's lamp, 16.9 x 10.6 in (Kitchen)
The Shelton Ship's Lamp is not your grandmother's kerosene lantern. www.amazon.com/.../ dp/B000G0G9N6 It is a true work of modern Danish art and deserves an honored place on the mantel. But if you actually want to use one, be prepared for a few problems. Lighting the lamp requires lifting the glass chimney by hand. No convenient lifting lever as found on most $5 lanterns. The base holds a full liter of kerosene, enough for 24 hours of light. But to fill the base, you must partially disassemble the lamp, removing the chimney and the wick mechanism. The Socony kerosene lamps of 100 years ago (and that $5 lantern) have convenient screw cap filling openings. The lamp gives off about as much light as a 40 watt bulb and provides the heat of a 1500 watt electric heater. Danish ice fishermen use these lamps to keep their ice fishing huts toasty warm. The Shelton lamp is, indeed, a thing of beauty but I wish the designers had paid as much attention to function as they did to form.
