short and sweet,
By Gialdini (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shipwrecked and Seduced (Kindle Edition)
Shipwrecked and Seduced is necessarily constrained by its length - barely more than 50 pages. But still I love the setting. McCabe manages to evoke some of the beauty and exotic splendor of the Spanish Main. In accordance with the title, the heroine Maria Gonzales is shipwrecked in a storm. The only survivor, she is brought to Santo Domingo and placed in the care of the hero, Carlos de Alameda, aide to the governor and a spy for the Spanish king. Then comes the seducing. There's not much time for character development, and the romance is the love at first sight variety propelled by Maria's joy to have survived the shipwreck. This means grabbing life by the horns and jumping quickly into bed with Carlos. Even if it's all a bit rushed, especially the all too neat resolution at the end, what more can you expect from such a short story? And I was still able to get a sense of Maria and Carlos' characters. Taking it as it is and accepting it on its own terms as a very short story, Shipwrecked and Seduced is well written and enjoyable.
