Amazon.com Review

Bestselling author Debbie Macomber's Shirley, Goodness and Mercy follows a few weeks in the life of capitalist slime-ball Greg Bennett as he hits rock bottom. When Greg's desperate prayers for guidance reach heaven, angels Shirley, Goodness, and (you guessed it) Mercy are given the less-than-ideal assignment of aiding him on the path to redemption. With Greg's history of abandoning his pregnant girlfriend, betraying his brother and business partner, and ignoring his dying mother, the angels have their work cut out for them. Like Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather of Sleeping Beauty fame, these winged women flit about with as much success as silliness, but the novel pulls off a feel-good spirit that befits the Christmas season. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal

Facing financial ruin and forced to reassess his totally self-centered, wasted life, 60-year-old vintner Greg Bennett wanders into a San Francisco church and, uncharacteristically overwhelmed by his failures, asks for forgiveness. What he gets is Archangel Gabriel's impulsive, wacky trio of angelic prayer ambassadors, who manage to help him atone for the past and put his life back togetherAall in time for Christmas. Borrowing heavily from the parable of the Prodigal SonAthere's even a resentful "other son"AMacomber produces a story that is both emotionally touching and lightly sprinkled with humor. In a timely but uncommon move, she uses a hero who is somewhat older than the norm. Despite its brevity, obvious heavenly "coincidences," and not always admirable hero, this novella has all the charm of Touched by an Angel and will please readers who have been patiently waiting for another of Macomber's "holiday angel" books and should appeal to fans of inspirational romance fans as well. Macomber (Promise Texas, Mira: Harlequin, 1999) is a best-selling author of sweet, contemporary romances and lives in Port Orchard, WA.

Shirley, Goodness & Mercy are back! They are ready, willing and able to help. Yes, they are still driving Gabriel up the wall. Like all other Macomber books I have read, this book is definitely a good read. My first experience with Shirley, Goodness & Mercy, was in A SEASON OF ANGELS, and I have enjoyed reading about them ever since. As always, they were funny, spontaneous and down to earth. Using their special magic, they turn everything around and touch your heart. Of course, the recipients of their help, never saw it coming!
The only draw back for me (an AVID reader) was that the book was not LONG ENOUGH! Debbie Macomber is one author I could read all day!

It's the holiday season, but life certainly isn't a winter wonderland for cold-hearted Greg Bennett ... until three well-meaning (and slightly trouble-prone) angels step in to give this modern-day Scrooge a second chance at happiness.
SHIRLEY, GOODNESS and MERCY, the new, gift-sized hardcover from bestselling author Debbie Macomber, is a heartwarming modern-day fable of forgiveness, redemption and second chances.
Greg Bennett chose his solitary path a long time ago. As a young man, faced with the responsibility of an unplanned child, he fled from commitment, walking away from the love of his life. Later, when his business, a winery in California, is just starting to take off, Greg turned his back on a friend in need. And, on the day his own seriously ill mother was admitted to the hospital, Greg decided not to postpone the court appearance that would end his second marriage, and he arrived at the hospital too late to say goodbye.
Now, his third marriage is in shambles and his business is on the verge of ruin - and he's praying for a miracle.
Although Greg's transgressions are almost too many to count, the Archangel Gabriel couldn't help but notice the desperate plea for help from this lost soul. Something in Greg Bennett had cried out to heaven, lamenting his empty life. Who could Gabriel send to Earth to convince the man to turn a new leaf? For a task this difficult, there could only be one option: Shirley, Goodness and Mercy.
The assignment was tough, this delightful trio of guardian angels agreed. Greg needed to make amends with the woman he left behind, gain the forgiveness of his best friend, reconcile with his brother, and save a life to replace the one lost due to his selfishness.
On Christmas Eve, Greg Bennett will have the opportunity to redeem his soul and discover that he is worthy of a second chance ... if he can learn to accept that he, too, has a role in making miracles happen.

Three inept angles find their latest project to be a man much disliked. When he finds himself on the bottom, about to lose everything, he asks for help but does not really believe he will get it. Shirley, Goodness, & Mercy find a warm, and satisfactory way to help him. I liked this book because it reminds me that everyone needs a little kindness and we often find it in unusual places. There are both tears and chuckles in this book. It is short, sweet, and a wonderful read aloud book.

I ordered this book for a friend and later read it myself. I laughed out loud and cried a few times too. Having a Phil and Greg situation in my own family-the story really touched a cord. You know the destination but the journey is fun anyway. Shirley, Goodness and Mercy are my kind of angels!

Shirley, Goodness and Mercy was a fun book. Typical of Debbie Macomber, it was a treat to read. I ordered it because my friend mentioned it and has read other books both by Ms Macomber and in the angels series and was extremely please when the book came in "like new not embarrassed to give as a gift" condition and I'd forgotten, if I even paid attention that it was hardback. This is a fun read. Enjoy.

The story line with the Angels just goes to show that sometimes there are some unknown interventions. If you like Angels, or the idea of Angels, you'll love Debbie Macomber's books with the Angels.
