Book Description

October 1, 2001
They called her "Little Miss Miracle." With the wink of an eye and a dimpled grin, Shirley Jane Temple brightened smiles, melted hearts, and set toes a-tappin'. Born the year before the Great Depression, indescribably adorable Shirley was just what the world needed to lift itself out of the doldrums. She was, said Irvin S. Cobb in presenting Shirley a special Oscar in l935, "the world's greatest gift of joy and happiness."

Lifelong fan and renowned collector Loraine Burdick has compiled this treasure chest of memories of the irresistible youngster with the fifty-two perfect curls. Featuring never-before-published photos, glorious color portraits, and rare publicity pieces, The Shirley Temple Scrapbook takes us into Loraine's very own magical place dubbed "Shirleyland."

The Scrapbook chronicles Shirley's stellar career, from her start in the Baby Burlesks to her standout performances in such films as Bright Eyes and Captain January. ! We become privy to how Shirley became the first toddler to promote the film industry; why her hand-holding song-and-dance routine with Bill "Bojangles" Robinson in The Little Colonel was considered so controversial; and what made her shine among Hollywood legends Ginger Rogers, Claudette Colbert, Cary Grant, Rudy Vallee, Gary Cooper, and Carole Lombard--to name just a few!

Loraine Burdick's valentine to Shirley Temple invites us to relive, or perhaps discover for the first time, some of the most glorious films of the twentieth century, sneak a peak at the styles of the day, and get a realistic view of Shirley's personal and professional thrills and disappointments on the road to fame. Complete with plot summaries, cast lists, and hard-to-find tidbits, The Shirley Temple Scrapbook is a must-have book of love that captures the magnanimous spirit of a celebrated personality who enraptured us all.

About the Author

Loraine Burdick began collecting Shirley Temple memorabilia when she was a youngster in Seattle, Washington, and today her collection is one of the most extensive in the world. She is the author of thirty books including Shirley Dolls and Related Delights, Folio of Shirley's Dolls, Shirley's Christmas Toys, Shirley's Doll's, Shirley's Toys, and an earlier version of The Shirley Temple Scrapbook.

Ms. Burdick has contributed photographs, feature articles, stories, and poems to such magazines as American Collector, Parents' Magazine, Jack and Jill, Antique Trader, and West Coast Peddler. Since 1966, she has written and published Celebrity Doll Journal, a reference for collectors of paper items, toys, dolls, books, films, and related items.

As a young woman, Burdick spent six years with Presbyterian missions in Alaska and taught first grade in the village of Angoon. When not writing or collecting, she somehow finds time to volunteer at a local nursing home in her native Washington, as well as sing in the church choir, play piano, and participate in the Wednesday jamboree.

More About the Author

I was just a farm kid and met the man of my dreams, a WWII vet at the U of W. I was already writing stories and collecting stuff--paper dolls and anything Shirley Temple. We went to Barrow, Alaska as Presbyterian missionaries and besides having 2 babies I started sharing my writing both publicity, Alaska history and stamp collecting. After a second 3 years term in Alaska, this time in an Indian village in Southeastern Alaska, my postpolio caught up with me and I began writing from home in earnest. Moody Press and Colonial press published books and after 1000 sales to various magazines I gave up counting. My first Shirley Temple book was well-received and went into 2 editions with 5 formats, but I saw the need for control of text, facts and information shared and began my own publishing company in 1960. In 1966 I began the quarterly research magazine CELEBRITY DOLL JOURNAL with no ads, nothing but careful facts and a detailed reference still going and since there are no personal or other ads to date it, every issue is still in print (or reprint) and useful. Next came the Shirley Temple books with some details of facts and lots of rare photos. So far there are 17. By l977 I was asked to be listed in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICAN WOMEN. I am a nut for details and accuracy, a VERY great admirer of Shirley Temple Black but I'm most proud of my Moody book written while in Angoon, Alaska: JANICE AND BOB AT FAMILY WORSHIP. I wrote it first for my own two girls but now it is being used all over Indonesia for teaching very eager ambitious children and teens. My work is about sharing, inspiring --and some delightful fun along the way--which in my case is a way too full, messy house.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a treasure!, January 25, 2002
This review is from: The Shirley Temple Scrapbook (Hardcover)
The Shirley Temple Scapebook is not only a great picture book but it gives a good deal of interesting detail about Shirley's life. I love the way Loraine Burdick takes information from several other resources and books about Shirley and combines them to create a broader picture. Thus, leaving you to your own opinion. It is wonderful to look through the scrapebook and relive old memories. I think the book would be appealing to both adoring fans and those with only mild interest. However, how many people can resist Shirley Temple. Enjoy. I highly recommend the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A treasure for Temple fans, March 12, 2008
This Shirley Temple Scrapbook is really a wonderful little treasure for all the Temple fans out there. As the name bestows, this book is fully loaded with all kinds of images of Shirley Temple. These photos range from publicity shots to movie scenes to private photo collections. Many I've never seen before.

Additionally, there are interesting little tidbits about Shirley's experiences while filming her movies. Also, there is a cronological listing of all her movies starting from her Baby Burlesque material all the way till A Kiss For Corliss, which was released in 1949. There is a short listing of plot as well as all the characters, producers, and directors for each movie.

Overall this is a very a nice and thorough visual document of Shirley Temple's amazing career. Her sparkle is well evident in many of these photos and proof of why she was such a success and why you will really enjoy this wonderful scrapbook.
