I love Shirow Masamune. Shirow is well known for his mangas turned into animes Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell. This book reminds me of his art in Intron Depot 3 Ballistics. The subject of this book seems to center around some sort of military police. His women are sexy. Some may say they are out of proportion (their waists are too skinny) but I like it! This is particulary true of his newest art. Pieces 1 was mainly an art book with the exception of three short wordless comics, and not as sexually explicit as the later volumes (blurry bars block the naughty bits though). Starting with Pieces 2 and forward they sort of resemble a manga. Though I could not tell you if there is actually a story line as I can not read Japanese. This book is layed out to be viewed from the back to the front like a traditional style Japanese book. It's also pretty small overall. Not too many pages and it measures in at 6 1/4 by 8 1/2 inches. It is a hardback book. I own volume 1 all the way up to volume 6. I recommend it!

Firstly the quality of the artwork in this book is absolutely fantastic. The types of images in this book range from innocent but sexy to extremely erotic. I have two small complaints about the book. Annoyingly the book has small censor bars on a couple of pages which would otherwise show female genitalia, which really makes you wonder why Shirow didn't just draw the girls with some skimpy clothes on if they were just going to censor it anyway. And there are a few images I found disturbing. For example pictures involving a girl seemingly being sexually assualted by tentacle like structures, and one involving a naked woman being held down and forcibly scrubbed by guards in a shower block (and not in a sexy way). If the idea of this turns you on then I'm sure you will enjoy it, as I said the images are very well drawn however if you're anything like me you'll find some of the images confusing and moderately disturbing. These two small complaints are the reason I am giving the book 4 stars instead of 5. Pieces 1 has neither of these two issues; I rate it 5 stars. Nevertheless overall I am pleased with this books very fine illustrations.

This little book has some very glossy pages. There are some adult themes in this book, but overall, the art is amazing. That's really the best I can describe this book. It's not that big, plenty of detail in the art, as well as some examples of where he could have taken a character in some of his manga (mostly color changes on the clothes). You'll find yourself going through the pages more than once to see if you missed something on occasions.

One thing I did note was that there is some senoring, but I think that was a result of a time period in japan when it was illegal to show, or draw sertain parts of the human anatomy. Though, I would have expected the sensor bar to have been removed by now, but that may be because of the year it was published that they didn't, and chose not to redo it.
