Shisha Embroidery, May 19, 2009
This review is from: Shisha Embroidery: Traditional Indian Mirror Work With Instructions and Transfer Patterns (Paperback)
You might want to preview this book through Interlibrary Loan before buying it. First, there are six pages describing regional styles of shisha embroidery in Asia, but there are no pictures included in this section. Two pages of the book briefly describe the fabric, mirrors, threads, and needles used in shisha embroidery. There is a short ten-step list of how to attach mirrors to fabric. About four pages are dedicated to descriptions of the following embroidery stitches accompanied by black-and-white drawings: running, backstitch, stem/outline, chain, open chain, lazy daisy, satin, long-and-short satin, herringbone, closed herringbone, interlacing, french knots, couching, cross, Maltese cross, seedling, buttonhole/blanket, and ladder stitch. The book also includes 24 transfer pattern plates adapted from original shisha work from Kathiawar, Gujarat, Kuch, Sindh, and Pakistan. Black and white pictures of the sources for the patterns are found at the end of the book. Ultimately, whether or not you believe this book is worth purchasing will probably depend on your personal tastes with regard to the transfer pattern plates in this book. If you are looking for more details about the techniques of attaching mirrors to fabric, I would recommend learning directly from an actual artisan.
