Long-time collector Harriet Szechenyi concentrated on collecting "netsuke" of animals and mythical beings. A considerable part of the collection consists of so-called "shishi" (Buddhist lion-dogs). The author has described these miniature art objects at length, paying special attention to their symbolism and origin. This richly illustrated book, which includes some fine examples of this beautiful Japanese art form, is an invaluable guide for collectors. The appendix contains reproductions of the signatures found on the "netsuke".
