Book Description

January 1999 Extraordinary Lives
The Shishu Ladies of Hilo is in part a loving tribute to Ima and Yoshio Shinoda, written by their daughter, Shiho Shinoda Nunes, and granddaughter Sara Nunes-Atabaki. But what began as a family history and catalog of Yoshio Shinoda's shishu designs evolved into a carefully documented and illustrated account of the stitching community created by the Shinodas and their pupils on the Big Island from the mid 1930s to the late 1960s. This book traces the teaching of shishu in Hawaii and describes in detail the modifications made to traditional motifs and materials. It is, however, much more than a historical record of a textile art form. It raises questions about the relationship between these women, their ethnicity, and their needlework--in short, the role of art in achieving ethnic identity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Once in a lifetime, June 30, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Once in a lifetime a book appears which exceeds all great expectations. Here's the book. As extraordinary as its subject. The greedy designer in me would have liked more patterns, but I see why there aren't more.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Shishu Ladies of Hilo, September 17, 2008
This book gives a good description of the Shishu(Japanese Embroidery)Ladies of Hilo. It explains about the cultural bonding of these ladies and family memebers. The embroidery designs was adapted to include the Hawaiian culture since Hilo is on the Big Island of Hawaii. The pictures displayed in the book are excellent and colorful showing the details in the actual stitching. I attended a few of these classes with my grandmother as a child and I feel this book brings back many of those colorful memories. The pictures brings back memories of watching these ladies working on their embroidery.
