Customer Reviews

This is my first Shiva Rea yoga DVD, and I really like her as an instructor.
Leanne
Okay, so I say this about almost every new Shiva Rea yoga workout that I get, but this time I really meant it.
Nancy Loderick
Very little instruction is given on form, so it's a good idea to have some yoga experience before practicing.

I was just in a retreat with Shiva in Santorini in June and now this dvd comes out just a few months after , what a great souvenir (: . this dvd also has seven 20 min. plus bonus practices and meditations. there's also a 27 min. interview with Shiva talking about Santorini , the DVD and her new book and a 10 min. prana danda practice with Demetri and Shiva , no verbal instruction, looks fun. I hope they would release a prana danda DVD.
the DVD was filmed in several locations in Santorini.

from the matrix you can choose :
meditations : mudra meditation (6 min.), lunar meditation (10 min.) solar meditation (10 min.)
lunar : lunar backbending vinyasa (20 min.) - the only practice except shavasana filmed indoors (couldn't they keep filming outdoors), relaxing practice of hip opening and backbends. although this is a lunar practice it has side planks and "flip the dog" move which I love. pigeon and double pigeon . the practice culminates in pigeon with a thigh stretch or full pigeon (eka pada raja kapotasana) if you want to , not a good idea to try full pigeon after a 20 min. practice unless you're familiar with the pose .
moon salutations (20 min.) - I'm bored with salutations and 2 of the seven segments are regular salutations (: it's good as a warm up before the backbends practices though.
water vinyasa (20 min.) - fluid backbend practice - beautiful scenery , similar stuff from fluid power with the hip opening mandala namaskar and some backbends.
solar : :
sun salutations (20 min.) - the classical variation
earth vinyasa (20 min.) - filmed on the beautiful santorini caldera. a side to side interesting standing vinyasa (no chaturangas etc.) some balancing poses as well.
solar backbending vinyasa (20 min.

I am so stoked I ordered this DVD!! The scenery is beautiful & Shiva is inspirational, as always. I'm not going to go into detailed descriptions of the flows, as other have already done so - I'm simply writing about the highlights of this DVD.

I've been working through this DVD for about 3 weeks now, and it has become my favorite Shiva Rea DVD. Why? The flows are incredible & I love, love, love that Shiva includes so many more mudras & bija mantras than in previous DVDs. The earth vinyasa is my favorite flow, followed by the earth-water vinyasa then the lunar backbending flow. Then there's the sun salutations flow that incorporates the bija mantras with each movement of the salutation - brilliant! It's rekindled my love of sun salutations, as it's not your mother's sun salutations.

The meditations on this DVD are all awesome - I'd have to say my favorite is the solar meditation, also incorporating the bija mantras. The emotion that singing the mantras brings out in me is indescribable - the effulgence produced by this meditation is addictive.

This DVD also has a full 10 minute shavasana, which is a wonderful, peaceful way to end a practice. Also, be sure to check out the prana danda yoga movement meditation - it is absolutely beautiful!

Namaste!

I was so excited to get this DVD since Santorini is one of my absolute favorite places in the world! Some bliss-making yoga with the beautiful blues of Santorini in the background??! Yes, please!

This is my first Shiva Rea yoga DVD, and I really like her as an instructor. Although I have tried other yoga instructors, my go-to teachers are usually Ravi/Ana, Eion Finn, or Travis Eliot (and his Ultimate Yogi program DVDs). While Shiva Rea has a teaching style that is very different from any of theirs, I really like it and her personality.

When you first put the DVD in, you have to watch a two-minute ad for Acacia products that is rather annoying; my DVD player won't let me fast-forward to skip over it.

Once the main menu shows up, you have a few options to choose from:

* Introduction -- about one minute long, where Shiva Rea gives an overview of the DVD
* Yoga Matrix -- which allows you to mix and match various segments; included here is an explanation of how to use the Matrix; the Bonus Materials are also available to select from the Matrix menu
* Audio Options
* Bonus Materials -- contains a 26-minute interview with Shiva Rea and an 11-minute Prana Danda Yoga Movement Meditation done with a stick

The DVD contains seven different yoga practices, divided up into two main areas, and are each about twenty minutes long:

* Lunar -- Backbending Flow, Moon Salutations, and Water Vinyasa

* Solar -- Sun Salutations, Earth Vinyasa, Solar Backbending Flow, Earth-Water Vinyasa, and Solar Core (10 mins)

There are also three 6- to 10-minute meditations, as well as a 10-minute Lunar Shavasana.

The practices are all mirror-cued (which is great!), and there is a voiceover for each one.

I consider myself to be fairly experienced at yoga. I have done a lot of it on and off over the years and I know the names for most poses, even if I couldn't spell them to save my life. I actually prefer vinyasa yoga so was excited to get this DVD. I will start with the menu, which is the reason I'm giving this 2 stars rather than 1. The dvd includes seven different 20 minute sequences, an ending sequence, and some meditations. I expected I would have to pick up the remote every 20 minutes to continue, but you actually get to select as many sequences as you like, in order, and then press play to view them all together. I picked sun salutations, water vinyasa, and the shavasana. Since I have done about a million sun salutations in my life imagine my surprise when I absolutely couldn't follow along with Shiva Rea. She must have lungs the size of watermelons to breathe as slowly as she apparently does. I couldn't breathe as slowly as she does, and when I tried squeezing in two breaths for each one of hers it was too fast. After a few minutes I just ended up doing my own sun salutations, which is great but has nothing to do with the dvd. Twenty minutes of this is also way too long. She instructs you to change your meditation as you go along but I had no idea what she was talking about.

I don't want to ramble on and on, I tried 4 different sequences and couldn't follow any of them. My body got colder and colder and my back started to hurt. If you are an advanced practitioner who doesn't need any cueing you might enjoy this dvd, but in that case why would you need a dvd at all? I'm clearly not the target audience for Shiva Rea, but just in case you want a challenging, well cued vinyasa practice with the spiritual level set at medium, I highly recommend Yoga Journal: Yoga for Strength and Toning.
