Our favorite alphabet book yet!,
This review is from: Shiver Me Letters: A Pirate ABC (Hardcover)
Our two sons (5 and 2) absolutely love pirates, so we were immediately drawn to this book when we saw it. The whimsical pictures and interesting writing sold us on the book. It isn't written in your typical sing-songy alphabet book rhyme, although the rhyme and rhythm are still there. As parents, my husband and I love the way the kids have to "search" in the pictures to find the letters - for instance, the "S" is in the curve of the blade of a pirate sword and the "O" is a life preserver. Our 2 year old giggles every time we reach the ending (but I won't give that away!) You just can't go wrong with this book.

Whimsical and so much fun!,

June Sobel is the author of B is for Bulldozer: A Construction ABC. Henry Cole has illustrated more than forty books for children.
What young child isn't captivated by pirates? In Shiver Me Letters: A Pirate ABC, the gang of swashbuckling pirates are ordered by their captain to capture the alphabet. The pirate ship sets sail to search out and seize all the letters of the alphabet. They are determined that no letter will escape! Sobel's delightful adventure is told in rhyme and children will ask to be read the story over and over again. A by-product is that it is written in such a way that it will contribute to children learning the alphabet. The illustrations are fun and whimsical and greatly add to the story. Armchair Interviews says: Have some fun reading to your children and help them learn at the same time.

Cute Alphabet Book,

This is a cute alphabet book for the preschool set. The letters are cleverly disguised although by no means hidden. My three year old enjoys reading this as pirates have become popular recently with him and his friends. "R said the Captain!" (instead of "argh")

Loved this book! As a kindergarten teacher, I am always looking for books with an alphabet theme. This book held my children's interest and mine. Some letters easy to spot, others required more thought. Great book for a pirate theme, or a letter p theme.

This is an adorable and entertaining book! I did it as a read-aloud to my first grade class and they immediately asked me to read it again. Prior to reading, I asked them if they knew what Pirates said, and they all growled, "ARGH!" which was the perfect lead-in to this story..."R" said the pirate. "R's not enough! We need more letters to make us sound tough!" So the pirates go off in search of the entire alphabet. The pictures and rhyming text make it a very enjoyable story.

I'm a Speech Pathologist and purchased this book, along with Pop Up Pirate (a game) to make a pirate themed lesson for my students. I love this book because it really encourages discussion and also helps kids who are working on articulation because every sound in the alphabet is in this book. I love it.

My 4 year old son is very intersted in Pirates and 18th century stuff, his favorite movie being Barry Lyndon, and the Pirates of the Carribean series. With this book, he`s getting more interested in learning to read. I`m also an EFL teacher in Japan and can perhaps utilize the idea in this book in my lessons.

There's More To The Pirate Alphabet Than ARRR!,
By
This review is from: Shiver Me Letters: A Pirate ABC (Hardcover)
Shiver Me Letters plays off a very cute (and wonderully geeky) joke, the pirate's fixation on the letter "R", as in "ARRRRR!". The pirate captain has decided that his crew needs to expand their horizons beyond just "R". So they lower their anchor ("A"!) at a desert island and set off seeking a buried treasure of letters.
And yes, "X" does indeed mark the spot. Told in rhyming couplets by June Sobel, this story will have youngsters reading along as they follow the adventures of the pirate crew through the letters of the alphabet. Henry Cole has illustrated the pirates as cute cartoon animals, including a crocodile captain who wears a rubber-ducky floatation device (it even has an eyepatch!). The illustrations are humorous and colorful, and the text is plain fun as it bounces from one location to the next, covering all of the classic pirate motifs while it moves through the alphabet. To make things even more fun, the letters of the alphabet are hidden in the illustrations, giving a nice treat for visual and artistic learners. The ending is adorable too. Alphabet books are great learning tools for young children, and this one has the added advantage of telling an amusing story.

We checked this book out at the library at first and my two-year old loved it so much..we decided to order our own copy. He loves to repeat what the pirates say and in the process is learning his ABCs. We read this book several times a day! He loves it and we don't even mind the repetition.
