One of the finest records you'll hear, November 5, 2003

First off...
I grow so weary of people comparing this band to Pavement, which
is tired and also doesn't do the band justice. Lyrically, this
band is way beyond Pavement, and I think musically too.
This album is more cohesive and moving than any Pavement record and if you
can get ahold of the Dottie Hoffman 7" then you're in for a real
treat. In my opinion, there are more similarities lyrically and
vocally to Camper Van Beethoven, a band that people seem to have
all but forgotten, giving Pavement the tip of the hat for nearly
everything. The Fall would probably be more in line on the list
of influences as well. I digress...
Fireside is an amazing work. I'd buy the album for that song
alone, but the rest of it is riddled and pregnant with such great
musical ideas that you will probably struggle to decide which
song is your favorite.
One last thing, I often read people say of this band "Nothing
New", and it pains me to hear people so hyper focused on
"originality". Anyone ever listen to Mozart or read Shakespeare?
If you have you will know that these are two examples of the old
being taken and reshaped and reworked. Ruby Keeler in much the
same way takes much from it's influences, and it is interesting
to mark them, but it is even more interesting to listen to what
they do with them. In everything that I have heard from them they
have assembled interesting, moving and over the water mark music.

Ruby Keeler (and what a great ode to a B movie star) is flying fantasy and earthy pleasure
a band with an edge that they're not faking

Sounds good, is good, June 21, 2000
This review is from: Shiver Shiver (Audio CD)
These guys remind me a little of Pavement in the way they bend the traditional pop song. It's all good, but worthy of special mention is the cool Helena Bonham Carter. It's a song I was singing for days after I heard it.
