3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent single
This is a decent single. What I love about Coldplay is that most of the time they put out really good b-sides; good, original, unreleased songs, not just some live track or dance remix. I wish the singles market here in the States was as large as it is over in England cause I feel we're really missing out on some great stuff. Anyway....

5.0 out of 5 stars The stunning first single of "Parachutes", February 12, 2001
This review is from: Shiver / For You / Careful Where You Stand (Audio CD)
Following a couple of early singles in 1999 ("Brothers and Sisters", "The Blue Room EP"), Coldplay issued this first single off of their debut album "Parachutes" in March 2000. The single contains 3 tracks and runs just over 15 min.

"Shiver" is a wonderful mix of the band's harder and softer work in one song. The song opens with a great guitar riff, then giving way to Chris Martin's voice, then smartly intertwining vocals and guitars, with fine backing from drums and bass. Wow!

"For You" finds Chris at the panio, with the band eventually joining in gently. The vocals are hauting on this track (witness Chris whispering "For You" in the fade-out...)

"Careful Where You Stand" starts of with accoustic guitar only, with additional but sparse intrumentation later on. What makes Coldplay so good is the mix of fine melodies with smart but touching lyrics ("I am cured when I'm by your side"). This song demonstrates that so well.

In the tradition of Oasis and Travis, Coldplay issues singles that do more than rehash the lead track a couple of times. The quality of the "B side" songs are amazing. Both "For You" and "Careful" are not found on "Parachutes", so the bottom line is clear: buy this!

4.0 out of 5 stars My all time favourite Coldplay song "For You", November 2, 2001

if you love the softer side of Parachutes, then invest the cash in this ep for the 2 b-sides.

"For You" is their masterpiece. Right up there with "Spies" and "Trouble". Sparsely driven by piano and as haunting as they get.

"Careful Where you Stand" is nearly as beautiful and mellow, this time acoustic guitar based.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Angelic, March 23, 2000

An excellent single, what with Chris Martin's cherubic voice and the band's bright, exuberant sound. (Perfect for pining Jeff Buckley fans.) Coldplay is one of the best new bands to come out of the UK in the last couple of years, and this is a perfect introduction to them.

"Shiver" was never really my favorite of Coldplay's songs. It's not bad, it's just not as good as most of their others. Track 2, "For You" is not bad, it's a slow piano based number that moves along gently yet never quite achieves lift-off. The closing song, "Careful Where You Stand" is a great one however. It has a beautiful melody and a wonderful guitar part. It's definitely better than some of the tracks off of Parachutes.

A decent single, worth the five dollars you can get it for.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't think of anything better!, June 28, 2000
This review is from: Shiver / For You / Careful Where You Stand (Audio CD)
I first heard this tune on the radio, and couldn't wait to buy the single. Chris's voice is just absolutely brilliant! He creates such emotion and atmosphere, it goes straight to your heart. The B-sides . . . well what can i say! They really care about their music and keep them at the same brilliance as the Shiver itself. If you want to buy anything buy this! There new single Yellow is also out and their album is out July 10th so get saving!

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST Little (not for long) BAND on the PLANET!, April 25, 2000
This review is from: Shiver / For You / Careful Where You Stand (Audio CD)
I first experienced Coldplay on NME's live Webcast have not been the same since. When the full album arrives (rumor has it May/June) all Hell/Heaven is bound to break loose in the U.K. and elsewhere! THIS IS A BAND TO WATCH!

Bottom line: I listen to tons of bands. I own about 800+ Cd's and this single right now is my most prized. "Shiver" is a fine example of what this band is capable of...the B-sides are beautiful as well. Perfect vocals...perfect lyrics...perfect music.

If the rest of Coldplays studio material is as good as this single they are setting themselves up to leave a very big and meaningful mark in the world of music and beyond.

5.0 out of 5 stars No more musical holes for me, July 10, 2000

I Have just bought the album (on the day of it's realice) as I wanted to be in this part of the history of music, and they have truly shuke the foundations, The emotion captured in there music causes you to be covered in goosebumps (The name Coldplay you see) This is quite a statement but this music made by those four lads is all I'll ever need. I heard them live on Radio 1 with steve Lamacq and I taped it, then lost it (I had a copy of the illusive brothers and sisters song to) and now this has happened, being a song writer and singer\guitarist myself the inspiration I have now is going to be forever there. Have faith in the guitar band my friends, as coldplay have joined the ranks

5.0 out of 5 stars Coldplay truly provokes Shivers down your spine, September 19, 2001
This review is from: Shiver / For You / Careful Where You Stand (Audio CD)
When I first heard Coldplay I was amazed on how beautiful their songs were. The lyrics instantly struck me. The guitars beautiful. The sound beautiful. I was introduced to Coldplay a little while back by an friend of mine from the UK. I have bought Parachutes and have downloaded every song thats not included on the album. They truly are a sound that brings out so much emotion. Shiver was the first song of theirs I had heard and I instantly fell in love with Coldplay. Every one of their songs is quality music that is hard to find lately. I would tell anyone to buy this and buy Parachutes!!! Shiver has brought me to tears. There arent many songs that can make a teenager cry. This truly is a masterpiece!! Coldplay sends shivers of emotion up and down my spine.. :) Quality Band quality music. I always have an extra copy cause I always end up wanting to share it with people so i give it away!!! Their cd is ALWAYS in my stero.
