5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated!
Shivers is the game to which I measure all other games.

It has spectacular atmosphere. The soundtrack is rather unforgettable, and sometimes pretty darn catchy (damn that elevator!). 1.0 out of 5 stars too small for the current screen
Unfortunately, I cannot play this game. Have taken my system and the game to Geek Squad, they cannot get the screen to enlarge so that we may see the entire screen. No the resolution will not help, we've tried everything. ALl you get is a partial screen in the middle of a full screen, cannot play the game, bought it for nothing!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated!, September 4, 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Shivers (CD-ROM)
Shivers is the game to which I measure all other games.

It has spectacular atmosphere. The soundtrack is rather unforgettable, and sometimes pretty darn catchy (damn that elevator!). The graphics are vivid--I haven't found a game with as rich and relevant scenery. Every other game in the genre seems to have a rather drab/realistic setting punctuated with brief glimpses of panoramic prettiness (an ocean, a temple in the distance, etc). Even if the supernatural elements are a bit primitive (c'mon, it was 1996), it's worth glossing over those flaws.

As for plot, the TON of traditional puzzles could easily have been irrelevant, but throwing a crazy professor and museum curator in there makes it plausible-ish that you have to solve a puzzle at every turn. You spend a lot of time clicking around by yourself, but that's how I prefer to play a game like this--there's no stunted conversations, bad lip/dialogue syncs, going away and coming back eight billion times to trigger the proper conversation...and being alone in the museum just gives you more time to freak yourself out and form paranoid theories about the professor and his family. Good times!

Overall, it's a fun little game that, after owning it for over a decade, I've played over and over again as a teen and as an adult. Give it a try and be forgiving on the aforementioned supernatural graphics!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Fun, February 28, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Shivers (CD-ROM)
This was the best game I had ever played when it came out in 1996. The graphics aren't the impressive part- it's the gameplay. It's not 3-D; it is a series of pre-rendered images that give an impression of 3-D space.

If you like puzzles and thinking, you will probably love this game as much as I do. It's not an action game that requires reflexes & a good mouse, like many shooters such as Half-Life, Counterstrike, Unreal Tournament, etc. It's all in the mind so you can use a cheap ball mouse and no mouse pad.

Awesome game that runs on practically any computer. I can't seem to find it for sale anywhere, though...

5.0 out of 5 stars In this case Old is better!, August 14, 2005

Having started playing adventure, role playing games with the original Zork on a C64.... you will have assumed correctly, that I have played a few as in Hundreds???
Sierra designed and produced some of the best games made and played. Shivers is still number 1 in my book over all the games, from various companies, that I have played.
Shivers is a one CD game that encompasses 30+ detailed and awe inspiring rooms to be explored and investigated. The atmosphere is eerie and at times frightening but nonetheless, more fun for it.

If you have not played it, then do. If you like puzzels, humor (as if anyone could refrain from laughing when they look at Prof Windlenot) but basically just the envolvement in solving the mystery of the Museum while getting to have tons of fun is worth the purchase. An extra bonus to Shivers is that they actually give great information and facts about the artifacts in the museum. It was interesting while playing to learn about other cultures, astrology, science, etc.

The puzzels are challenging with some simplistic and others need clues and wits. Yet, none are unsolveable. The story line is cohesive and reels you in so you want to find out what has happened while saving your game often so you don't die too.

So good luck in avoiding the Ixupi if you decide to enter the realm of SHIVERS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Horror/Mystery Game, May 20, 2006

This review is from: Shivers (CD-ROM)
Trapped in a museum of paranormal phenomena, you have to solve puzzles and capture evil spirits known as Ixupis before they drain your soul away. This game is really one of the earliest horror games, but it still stands out as a real gem. Somewhere between being a puzzle game and a horror game, it's still a good play. Very challenging. And even with the horror themes, it's not particularly graphic either. The atmosphere and sound effects are down right creepy, but the game itself isn't likely to give kids nightmares or anything. If you haven't play this game yet, go check it out. Its still fun to play all these years later, and I recently re-installed it on my computer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Game ever, July 29, 2010

I agree this is one of the best games ever created. If only they would create games like this again for those who love suspense. All you need is your mouse and you play for hours. I keep hoping one day I'll find they've re-released it and I'll be able to play it on my MAC. It's like a good book that scares you and you can't put it down, even though night is ticking away and you need sleep. One night I was playing after everyone went to bed and "something" jumped out and "got" me in the game. I had to turn it off and wait for day light. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shiver me timbers ...., April 25, 2010

As noted by other reviewers, this is a well designed game with an excellent plot-line to what amounts to a series of puzzles and exploring an old museum. Released in 1996, it has as much play value today as it did then. I find that I keep coming back to it. Just exploring the various rooms of the museum is fun in of itself ... then there are the little life force stealing demons to capture, and the puzzles to solve to find the containers to keep them in. All in all, a very captivating software experience. Be sure to keep a notebook and pen handy as you can only carry one jar and cover at a time ... and each jar and cover are unique to each of the demons. You'll want to note where you have stashed the different jars you have found so that when you find one of the ixupi, you can get the right jar and cover to capture it with.

Now a warning !!!! I have had this program to run fine on windows XP ... however, the new windows 7 does not want to run it for some reason and I cannot find a patch on the internet for the new windows version. I hate that about Microsoft. They keep coming out with new windows versions which you have to get when you buy a new computer, and they are not always backwards compatible with older software. Old does not necessarily mean poor quality software. There are many older games which are just as additive today as they were when they were first released.

So, if you have a computer with windows 7 on it, buy this program with the above mentioned caveat in mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shivers is the best Role Playing/Adventure game EVER MADE, March 4, 2006
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
The original 'Shivers' game is by far and away the best adventure game ever created. The difficulty, beauty of design, and ease of use make the game easily one of the best of any platform. It's worth searching this game out, but not until I get my copy!

5.0 out of 5 stars my favourite adventure, August 12, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Shivers (CD-ROM)
This is the best adventure I've ever played. The atmosphere is overwhelming, and I would sneak into it every evening after work in 1998. I agree, it's definitely not an action game, although your reflexes have to be quick when trying to catch a ghost/spirit. I was immersed in it, lost inside my own world. Actually it's the "second life version" of 1996, it is that addictive. This is a spontaneous review and not that deep, I was reminded of this game when someone asked me what my all-time favourite adventure was and I just wanted to back up the critics who thought highly of it. Will it run on Windows xp ? I'll order it again.

Very good. Fresh, horror, excellent puzzles and a nice scenario. Cons: The finale, but you can't have them all.
