Easily One of This Year's BEST,
By Sean Hansen (Bountiful, Utah USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shock of Being (Audio CD)
Tim Kinsella does some amazing singering, and Sam Zurick, Nate, and Bobby, are so solid in this album. You can tell they really put alot of work and heart into this one.
"Amscaredica" (The Beautiful) and "Television Cemetery" are both very good songs for the month of of October and the whole fall season. For those of you interested in getting into bands like Owls, Joan of Arc, Captin Jazz and other testiments of Tim, this is a really good place to start. For those who already like these bands, you should love this. "Everytime someone says bad things about this album God lets someone peanut butter some poor cat's paws."

There is no doubt this is an amazing cd. But people need to understand that just cause you dont like the singers voice doesn't change if the band is good or not. Expand your mind capacity. If you're gonna rate this cd based on Tims voice theres no reason for you to be posting review. Bobby Burg, Nate Kinsella, and the amazing Sam Zurick, along with Tim, help make this cd unforgetable. The band experiments alot in this cd. Some songs on this cd like Fumio Nambata Had a Farm and Television Cemetery have to be some of my favorite songs from any of the past bands. I recommend this cd to any fan of Cap'n Jazz, Joan of Arc, ect.

I Like Playing Make Believe,
This review is from: Shock of Being (Audio CD)
I play it in my cd player because it is "shocking". I am sick of people saying how much they hate Tim's voice. His voice is beautiful and so is his beer belly. Make Believe has reached a newly discovered realm of music that is found somewhere between Cap'n Jazz and the later Joan of Arc era. Tim's lyrics are, as usual, amazing. His lyrical prose makes me want to cry, scream, and laugh at the same time; but we can't forget the rest of the team who play a no less integral part of the band. So here is a thank you to Make believe for such a fun album. It is fun to listen to.
Thank you Bobby, Nate, Tim, and Sam.

This is a step-down from the EP they released in 2004. The EP kind of assaulted you, and grabbed your attention. Shock of Being just feels much weaker, and sounds more like Owls than the Make Believe that was established with the EP. Oh well, it's still a good CD, but I don't forsee myself consistently returning to it like I do with the EP

I want to like Tim Kinsella, I really do. But I just think that his voice is crap. It works on some Joan of Arc stuff, but I just can't get into it. Mike, where are you? And is there any way that you can revive American Football? This is tired experimentation for experimentation's sake. No cohesion. Pity, becuase I had higher hopes.
