5.0 out of 5 stars You gotta double it.
I looked at the reviews and i read the problems people were having with this product. So instead of just following the instructions i modified them. I increased the boiling time to about 40 seconds, I cooled it for 5 seconds or less and bit into the mouthpiece for about a minute. it fit perfectly and i love it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great gel, uncomfortable frame
I'm not an athlete. I've never worn a mouth guard before. I'm currently taking kenpo and needed a mouthguard. This one looked fancy and the gel sounded comfortable. I followed all of the instructions and easily got the guard fit for my mouth. When it was all cooled down I tried it on again. The gel conformed perfectly to my mouth, giving a snug fit that felt good...

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit small for adult male., November 2, 2008
I am a 20 year old average sized male and This mouth guard was a little bit narrow for my mouth. i really had to bend the sides out after heating it up to fit it around my back teeth. The gel in the mouth guard is very effective and forms well to the teeth.

When I first started using this mouthguard I hated it. It felt so big in my mouth that it was hard to breathe and I would occasionally gag. I threw it off to the side of the court because I felt that it was doing more harm than good.

Then a few weeks later, I chipped my tooth. Luckily it was just a slight chip, but it got me to make a trip to the dentist for a customized mouthguard. Since I've been waiting for the mouthguard to come, I've been using the shockdoctor again. Now that I am used to it, I am no longer bothered/having trouble breathing/gagging all the time. I've come to realize that it actually offers a lot of protection, and the gel feels pretty nice on the teeth.

I am regretting going to the dentist to get a mouthguard, because this one definitely does the trick for about 1/20 of the cost.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Mouthguard, April 3, 2009

This is definitely the best mouthguard I've ever used. I've tried a few cheap ones that didn't mold properly, but I had no such problems with the Shock Doctor. The gel was very malleable after the boiling, and it conformed perfectly to my teeth. After cooling, it held its shape perfectly and was squishy enough that it held onto my teeth when I spoke. It has a great deal of cushion to it and it had no problem surviving tough training.

Look no further, this is the mouthguard to buy.

The gel conformed perfectly to my mouth, giving a snug fit that felt good. The problem was that the hard plastic outer portion that holds the gel was very uncomfortable to my upper lip in front. I could tell that if I got hit straight on in the mouth my lip would get very bloody very easily. I bought a different guard at a local big box store for less than two dollars just to see if it was my problem or the shock doctor's. The inexpensive mouth guard feels suitably protective, and the front and sides are infinitely more comfortable. I would recommend against this mouth guard.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good moutpiece - if you don't need a double sided one, August 9, 2011

This mouthpiece is comfortable, and works as advertised in that you can breath/talk while wearing it - BUT... The reason for that though is that it only protects the top row of teeth, not the bottom. I thought that might be the case when I ordered it, but couldn't really tell from the pictures or description. so I am putting it in the review so others might not make the same $10 mistake. For martial arts, a double mouth guard is a must so this one is basically useless in my opinion. I will keep it as an emergency backup but hope I never have to use it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Dental, May 24, 2008
This review is from: Shoc Doctor Gel Max (Misc.)
Mouth guards are key for any contact sport. I am an amature/recreational boxer and spar occasionally, and this has definitely saved my teeth on several occasions. I have also been hit without this mouth guard on, and have noticed a significant difference in impact after putting it on. If you clinch your teeth in during competition this will definitely prevent any possibility of breaking teeth.

Only thing I can complain about is that when I get hit in the mouth my inner lips get torn up. This is really a lot better than losing teeth though. Great product, and fitting was fast and easy (i did it with a Styrofoam cup of water boiled in microwave in about 5 minutes... very easy).

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great, April 7, 2008

This is the best mouthgaurd I have tried. It is far better than the clear plastic guard from the 1900's. Also better than the modern clear double mouthguards.

With this guard I can talk, breath and have good protection. Breathing is helped by the way it leaves a small gap at the front between the top and bottom teeth.

The multiple types of material help to absorb varying degrees of shock. The soft gel works for light impact, and the harder rubber kicks in for the hard impact (on a hard hit I actually felt this happen).

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great for jiu jitsu!, March 23, 2010

I had to buy a mouthguard for my jiu jitsu classes, and so I chose these. I'll be honest, I chose them because they came in pink! I've never used a mouthguard before now, but I found these real easy to use. The instructions were clear and it took me a whole 5 minutes to mold them to my mouth. My jaw size is on the small/average size, so anyone with an extra large jaw might have an issue.

I kept these in throughout my class and never had a problem breathing or swallowing. I didn't end up looking like a rabid dog either ;) The different colors choices are really nice, and the price is good too.
