Book Description

Web Review Studio Series March 8, 1997

This book, the second title in the new Web Review Studio series, shows how to create compelling and functional Shockwave movies for Web sites. The author focuses on actual Shockwave movies, showing how the movies were created. The book provides and explains the actual Lingo source code for the movies. It takes users from creating simple time-based Shockwave animations to writing complex logical operations that take full advantage of Director's power.

Additional topics include: creating leaner movies, using color palettes, exploring Net-specific Lingo and audio compression. Foreword by Marc Canter. Lavishly illustrated with over 250 full-color figures. The CD-ROM includes dozens of source Director files that you can open and examine and demo versions of Director for Macintosh and Windows.

The Web Review Studio series -- published by O'Reilly & Associates' affiliate company, Songline Studios, publishers of the groundbreaking Web sites Web Review and Ferndale -- demystifies the complexities of publishing multimedia on the Web. The series is aimed at creative Web professionals and enthusiasts -- the people creating graphics, animation, sound and multimedia on the Web.

The first two books, Shockwave Studio and Gif Animation Studio, cover two hot technologies for Web animation. Both include CDs with demo and free software, example files, etc.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

There are two main ways to create real multimedia for the Internet. One is to use Java and the other is to use Director. Director is easy, but it has a programming language called Lingo that is not a snap. Schmitt's book makes learning Director and Lingo easier. While this book is aimed at creators of webbed multimedia it also is a great introduction to Director and Lingo for those using them to write CD-ROMs. Very good book for both beginners and advanced designers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Director 5 is very different!, April 14, 1999
This review is from: Shockwave Studio: Designing Multimedia for the Web (Web Review Studio Series) (Paperback)
Neither the reviews nor bumpf mention is that this book concentrates on Director 5. There are fundamental differences between 5 and 6. The Score has been changed (for the better), and this book makes no mention of behaviours, forcing you to write script.

With Macromedia now on version 7 my advice would be don't buy this edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Shockwave and Director!, July 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Shockwave Studio: Designing Multimedia for the Web (Web Review Studio Series) (Paperback)
As an absolute novice to Director, this book has shown me what is possible using Director, Shockwave, and Lingo. Its one thing to explain multimedia. Now I can say,"Wow! This IS what I want to be able to do! I can do this!". With this new perspective I can dive into my other Director book (900 pages), and not feel lost or overwhelmed. I have direction!
