Gr K-4 Few things in a preschooler's life are more exciting than getting a new pair of shoes. Little Hippo needs new shoes and has a plethora of choices among styles, colors and purposes. There are shoes with jewels and glitter, shoes that zip or tie, shoes that clatter or light up, shoes for summer, basketball, ballet or tap. Some are just about perfect, but mom says, No, not at that price. Mom suggests little ducky shoes, but this fashion-conscious hippo turns up her snout. Finding shoes could take all week! Confused and exhausted, Little Hippo is almost ready to give up until she sees way up high. / One last pair I have to try and finds the perfect fit with colored laces, stripes and spots. / glowing, blinking polka dots. The rhyming text flows easily in a thinly-lined sans-serif type against a generous amount of white space. It is a natural complement to the bright aqua-blue based digital paintings that highlight a gray-based hippo dressed in a pink sweater and black skirt with matching pink barrette in her pageboy hairdo. My granddaughter, who is almost 4, simply loved the book! She had me read it 3 times. She kept asking why the mommy said "no" to the one pair of shoes that cost too much. She loved picking out which shoes she liked best in the book and identified with the shoes that were too tight. She insisted on taking this book with her on vacation. Looking forward to more from this author!

Love this book. Reads so lovely and my preschoolers love it. Especially the one who loves shoes and what little girl doesn't. Kids can identify with the wonder of shopping for that first pair of shoes themselves. Parents won't mind reading this one again and again.

First of all let me say that all of the books that Sue Fliess has authored have been excellent! I particularly like the main character in this book because so many girls are struggling with body image and the little hippo is carefree and enjoys being in her own skin.
Hippo is growing up and now she can go and choose her next pair of shoes. What girl is not enamoured by a shoe shopping spree? With fun rhyme married with outstanding illustrations this book is a true winner. Sorting through the shoe-options is not only educational but loads of fun. The spirit of the book is uplifting and the tempo is fast moving. Hippo and her mom have high (heels) and low (sneaker) moments when choosing the perfect pair but Hippo finds that if the shoe fits (and she likes it) wear it.
This will be a great book for girls of any age and a perfect read-aloud for the kids.
