3.0 out of 5 stars More Relationship Drama!
Shoe's On The Otha Foot(SOTOF) is yet another relationship novel filled with more of the same, typical storyline. It's the story of Leslie, an independent, spirited 21 year old, who decides against her better judgment to explore her womanhood and lose her virginity to Benjamin, her latest but much older(35 years old) beau. Benjamin seems to be a good BMW until we discover he's living with another woman and his teenage son. Rounding out the cast of central characters is Rachelle, cousin and good friend of Leslie's. Of course, Rachelle has her own drama going on as she is divorced with three kids and is juggling two men at the same time. SOTOF appears to be loosely crafted and as though someone decided to transpose their journal into a novel. The scenes/situations/characters do not offer a fresh perspective or unique storyline. On a positive note, SOTOF tries to present each character with at least some redeeming quality(I walked away liking all of the characters) and the drama did not appear far-fetched or over the top. If you're looking for a book that's an easy, quick read(I read the book in one setting) then this might be the book for you. If you're looking for a storyline with more depth and substance than you might need to search a little further.

3.0 out of 5 stars Shoe's on the Otha Foot, November 14, 2000
I found Shoe's on the Otha Foot to be a quick, easy to read book. The story line held my attention. No, this one isn't a pager turner but it will hold your attention. Leslie is a twenty one year old virgin, who has a weakness for a much older man Benjamin. The only problem is that Benjamin lives with his ex-wife and their son. Rachelle counsin of Leslie has a few problems herself, single with three children and one too many men in her life. This was an enjoyable read. Hunter Hayes, this is a good first attempt but there is room for improvement. I wish you much success. Be Blessed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GOOD, FAST READ!!, September 22, 2000
This was an excellent, well-written story about love, relationships, etc. The characters are well developed and you will not want to put it down. Be careful, because once you start, you will want to finish it. Excellent job, Hunter Hayes. I didn't like the ending, but that's okay because there's room for a sequel. I recommended this book highly.

Sometimes with a little more thought and editing an OK novel can turn into a better novel. I expected better. Leslie, the central character was not developed enough for you to appreciate the situations she encountered, especially dealing with Benjamin, the fine & sexy Construction worker. She meets him, briefly plays strong Sista, hard to get but looses it somewhere along the line when she becomes a tad to comfortable with his reasoning of why he lives his life the way he does.

Then there's Rachelle, who does the 180% of Leslie and instead of opening herself up to men decides to finally leave all of that alone and to devote time to herself and God. In turn, she winds up meeting a very Special man without even trying. I personally was more attracted to Rachelle's plight and bootstrapping rise to happiness.

I only hope that the author has new insight into devolping her characters in her sophomore attempt. And that maybe she adds a little suspense or mystery to the already exhasted "girl meets boy" theme.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great debut...., March 6, 2001
By
Ava "terri553" (Fort Lauderdale, FL) - See all my reviews
When I first read the overview of this book I thought it was going to be another book about drama in relationships. I was so wrong. This book was about lessons learned in love and making the right choices in the end. Leslie, main character, fell for a man who is divorced, lives with his current girlfriend and son. He says he is unhappy with his girlfriend and he has told her so but yet he still goes home to her every night. After a few months of great dates with Benjamin and giving him her virginity, Leslie lays down an ultimatum and lets him know it's either her or his live-in girlfriend. Leslie made the right choice in the end for the sake of her happiness. Also in the book is Leslie's counsin (aka Cuz) who is juggling two men, divorced and has three kids. One of the men is alot younger than her and says he loves her. Then the other one is married and it seems he's only with her for sexual purposes because he can't help her with anything else. Cuz finally came to her senses after an altercation with her younger man and realizing the married man had nothing to offer her but sex. She then turned her life around by going to church and then she finally found happiness in the church. This was a wonderful debut by Hunter Hayes and I'll be awaiting her next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars The ex-wife name changed from Gloria to Sonia, November 6, 2000
By

I enjoyed reading the book and could not put it down. The only problem I had was trying to keep up with Benjamin's ex-wife's name. He would say Gloria and then he would say Sonia. Look at page 226(in the paperback) and he will mention Gloria, but on page 228 he says Sonia. Then the sister-in-law calls Sonia on the phone. You had me believing he had to ex-wife's, instead of one. The book was great reading material and I really enjoyed reading it. Can not wait for your second novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Give the sister a break!, April 18, 1999

This review is from: Shoes on the Otha' Foot (Paperback)
I also found many typos, characters misplaced, and at the end of the novel events do not follow a chronological order. Inspite of these errors I found the book quite enjoyable. If you visit Hunter Hayes' Web page stoneedgepress.com, you will see that see openly admits to an error she made in not having the book proof read and edited. When someone openly admits to errors we should be more than willing to help and not condemn them. Buy the book, overlook the errors and ENJOY!

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed very much, April 21, 2004
By
I thought this was a really good book with the exception of some editing errors. The book is about independant Leslie who is in school, and eager to get her career off the ground. She falls for a much older man with some major baggage is trying to figure out what she should do. Her "cuz" Rachelle is a single mother of three trying to juggle two men, and her life. The book is an easy read, and will hold your interest.

Again my only complaint is the editing. In one chapter Rachelle is driving a white toyota, then in another chapter it's a blue Toyota. Then she is driving a blue Plymouth, that turns into a blue Mazda. I hope Hunter Hayes got a much better editor with the next book.
