The Shogun Brothers Chameleon X-1 Wireless Gamepad Mouse is an innovative solution for gaming enthusiasts who frequently travel with their laptops. To make a long story short, this is a wireless mouse that you can flip over and use as a gamepad (similar to a Xbox 360 controller).

As a wireless mouse the Chameleon X-1 works pretty well. The only time I ran into trouble with this wireless mouse was when I tried to use the mouse on an uneven surface ... the gamepad buttons on the bottom of the mouse would get caught while I moved the mouse. This only happened when I tried to use the mouse on an uneven surface because the gamepad buttons are slightly recessed -- the buttons won't catch on anything if you're using the mouse on a flat desk or mousepad.

I would have liked a few more "glide pads" on the bottom of the mouse but more glide pads might have gotten in the way of the gamepad buttons.

You press a switch on the mouse to disable the mouse buttons and enable the gamepad buttons. This makes it easy to prevent accidentally pressing a button. The gamepad control layout is very intuitive and easy to use if you're familiar with controllers like the Xbox 360. That said, the Chameleon X-1 gamepad isn't very ergonomic and feels a little weird in your hands since it's a mouse that doubles as a gamepad.

Bottom line, I would have given this mouse/gamepad a perfect score if it had larger/more glide pads for the mouse and a more ergonomic grip for the gamepad. Still, this is a very good solution for laptop gamers who don't want to haul a separate mouse and gamepad. You can use the mouse for general productivity/work and then flip it over and play some games.

Whew. When a product like this comes along, I don't quite know how to approach reviewing it. I mean, it's trying to be three things at once, and that means I either need to review it as a whole and take every function into account for the final review score, or I need to review it as three different devices and let them each stand on their own.

I choose the latter. So let's get to it:

As A Mouse: The mouse function of the Chameleon X-1 is nice. I'd call it comparable to Logitech or Microsoft in most categories. It's smooth, works well, and is fairly versatile. I don't like the extra buttons being over there on the pinky-side of the mouse (I can't make my pinky work properly to press button on its own; That may be a physical disability on my part, so I won't hold it against them), and I don't like the way the battery compartment functions; There's a loud crack whenever you open it. I feel like I'm at risk of breaking it! All in all, it's a passable mouse and could do the job for any desktop or laptop user who wants a nice-looking, multi-button mouse.
Score for Mouse: 4 out of 5 stars.

As A Presenting Device: I barely messed with this, but it seemed to do the job well enough. The mouse buttons can be locked in place so the presenting side is all you use, and the mouse buttons aren't clicking willy-nilly while you're messing with the other side's buttons. It feels okay in the hand when used like this. It is responsive, easy to configure, and works just as you'd expect. The battery compartment, as noted above, makes that cracking noise and that's a bit troubling, but that's really the only major negative for the presenter mode.
Score for Presenting Device: 4 out of 5 stars.

As A Gamepad: Ugh. Where do I start?

It was a gift from my boyfriend after my Microsoft optical mouse died couple weeks ago. He knew my desktop has some games installed but I never invested on gamepad; so he chose this "gamepad mouse" for me. Actually I called it "monster mouse" because of its look. At first I didn't believe it'd work and I kinda resist to use. It has a beautiful case, but not convincing enough. However, after using it a while, I realized that it works great, and I decided to write a comment for this smart gadget.

What I like this "Chameleon X-1" most is its good appearance. The purple color looks great and rubber finish make it comfortable to use.

I enjoy the gamepad mode a lot. It is not a very sophicated gamepad, but it does gives everything a causal gamer like me. It got 10 buttons and 2 extra control pads - oh it can vibrate too. It runs smoothly and I'm totally satisfied. Beside, budget is a concern to me, as I won't play all games with a gamepad, X-1 is good enough and I'd feel unwise to get a "Pro" one.

I've tried the remote control mode with iTunes, and it works well. I have tested it from a distance from desktop, roughly 10m away; when new battery was loaded, and it got a crisp reception. Again, I'm satisfied to an extra remote control, and it is totally FREE.

The only thing I don't like is the terrible cracking sound from opening the battery compartment door. I've tried several times to prove it won't get damaged in spite of the sound. It is a small flaw, and probably I won't change battery everyday, so I think I can live with it.

Overall it is a nice gadget and I would give it a high recommendation.
