This review is from: Shogunal Politics: Arai Hakuseki and the Premises of Tokugawa Rule (Harvard East Asian Monographs) (Hardcover)
I read this book as part of Prof. Nakai's class at Sophia University in Tokyo. It helped launch my undergraduate thesis and fostered my lifelong interest in Japanese history. This is a tremendous book, covering a key period in Japan. Nakai does a masterful job of weaving historical events with the intelectual perspectives of the day. I only wish she would write more.
