To say it's pop music probably isn't fair, but to say it's catchy really is. This CD contains Shonen Knife's first two albums, which is definitely a fine place to start listening to the band. If you're a fan of the simplicity of Beat Happening and enjoy a little Ramones buzzsaw guitar, then these two albums will really satisfy.

Kurt Cobain was a musical genius in horse-sense, yet musically retarded when it came to his listening tastes. He namedropped certain bands alot, most of which were awful, and Shonen Knife was one of them. If you're here reading Shonen Knife reviews, there's probably a 30% chance you're here because of Cobain's reccomendation.

The albums are fairly lo-fi, certainly appealing to anyone that has an appreciation for that level of recording. But the songs do the most with the technology, and as such are extremely enjoyable. Really, the albums are quite similar to their third, Pretty Little Baka Guy, which for some reason seems to be a little more widespread in popularity. Go figure.

But the question is, is Shonen Knife any good? Well ...sort of. They're different. They're sort of like an Asian version of the musically retarded band The Shaggs, though Shonen Knife can actually keep timing.

This is the type of album you could write in 25 minutes while taking a dump on the toilet .. but that's kind of what makes it magical.

Tracklist:

1. Watchin 'Girl
2. Banana Fish
3. Miracles
4. Parallel Woman
5. Twist Barbie
6. Elephant Pao Pao
7. Tortoise Brand Pot Scrubbing Ceaner's Theme
8. Animal Song
9. A Day At The Factory
10. Burning Farm
11. An angel has come
12. Cycling is fun
13. Elmar Elevator
14. Banana Leaf
15. Chinese Song
16. Flying Jelly Attack
17. Cannabil Papaya
18. Dali's Sunflower
19. Insect Collector
20. Bye Bye
21. Parrot Polynesia

If you're looking for deep meaningful music, look elsewhere, but if you're looking to start a major pillow fight with somebody, then this will do nicely.
