Shoo Tags,
This review is from: Shoo!TAG Horse Fly and Mosquito Barrier Tag, Double for 2 Horses (Misc.)
I won a set of Shoo Tags last year at a competition. I braided them into the mane of my horse who HATES bugs. When we rode in the woods, he constantly tossed his head; in the pasture he was constantly moving to get away from the mosquitoes. I am buying another set for this summer. One set lasts most of the summer, so I think it is pretty cost effective compared to buying a lot of chemicals that don't work much better and have to be reapplied each day. This product did not get rid of 100% of the bugs, but at least 75%. My horse went from crazy from the bugs to where it was tolerable or better for him.

Tags seem to help but need stronger reinforcement on holes for horses,
This review is from: Shoo!TAG Horse Fly and Mosquito Barrier Tag, Double for 2 Horses (Misc.)
I bought one to deal with a tick infestation in our pastures after the flooding here in Arkansas. It seemed to help reduce the number of ticks significantly (from about 10-20 ticks a day to about 5-6) but did not completely eliminate - particularly at the rear underside of the horse. (Product instructions say to place in mane.) I will say that the one for myself seemed to work well - I did not have any ticks on me once I started attaching it to my pants at the waistband. A nice improvement to dousing myself with insect repellant. However, my Morgan only kept his on for about 2 months. I braided into his mane using nylon thread tied to the holes of the tag, and braiding rubber bands. It stayed in, but the tag itself eventually bent at the corners where attached, and fell off. The rubber bands and thread were still in place, so I can only surmise that the tag itself broke. Perhaps some thicker plastic or other reinforcement at the holes? I realize that metal would probably interfere with the magnetic idea. I also bought the flea and tick once for my dog. Those have lasted the entire 4 months. I can't say for sure if they helped, because, based on the results with the horse, I also did an Advantage treatment on her. I just couldn't take the chance on a flea infestation when surrounded by by neighbors who seem to think fleas are an acceptable part of dog ownership. I can say I saw no ticks on her, despite taking her for walks in our local state park. I am going to reorder the dog tags, and order a horse fly tag and see how it works - flies are particularly bad right now. I will be interested to see if the horse has a reduction in flies compared to the other horses in the pasture. Part of the reason I am going to order is to support what I think sounds like a wonderful idea. I hope that continued purchases will allow the company to make improvements on the product as it is field-tested with consumers.

Wow... what a great idea! I was SO tempted to buy these! I even bought them after I lost my job because they sounded so good...(5 packs of 2) Do they work? I don't have the foggiest idea... I can't seem to get them to stay in for longer than 24 hours... Most of the time they are coming out by the next morning... Plus... you have to have the barcode side toward the horse... horse shaking head... leads to turned tags. Maybe they should make them double sided... I tried everything to keep these on... braids, braids, more braids, plus mounting them on metal barrettes so maybe they would stay flat... nope... Amazon had them cheeper than anyone else.... but I still lost a lot of money... including buying barrettes and hair ties... You are probably better off buying fly masks and sheets... I have 4 Spanish Mustangs, a Navajo Pony, 1 half Arab and 5 Minis... a few horses may have a tag barely hanging on at the very ends of the mane... I've found a few in the dirt.. a few almost folded because the horses rubbed their necks... maybe these are meant for stalled horses that don't move much and don't have pasture buddies... ? I don't know... my horses are out and together... ??? Seems like a great idea... needs some improvements...

I have 5 horses but only bought 4 tags,,I noticed after a few days of them wearing them that the one without did seem to have more flys around her than the others.I read reviews of people saying that thier tags kept falling out I have never had one even come loose the only problem is that they flip over. I put the tags at the top of the braid and found using the middle strand of the braid helps keep them close to the skin. Also when you stop and think about how much fly spray costs this is a fraction of that cost considering they are good for 4 mos. makes sense to me. Thanx so much Deb

I wanted these to work, I really did. The idea of being mostly fly free for up to 4 months really made me excited. I hate fly spray, but sadly it looks like I will still be using it.Cons: #1 you can't keep them attached to the horse. I tried braiding, tip tied to the halter, and even metal clips and every time they are off within a day. If they won't stay on the horse, they don't even stand a chance of working #2 They just do not work even when they did stay atached. Even when they were on the horse they just did nothing. THere was no decrease in flies and the flies were even on the tags! I made sure to follow the instructions but it made no difference. THe flies were there until I used fly spray. #3 there is no refund if they don't work, so you will be out the purchase price. In todays economy I can't afford to be out 20 bucks So make sure you take heed. I really love the idea, but sadly it is just a pipe dream. Pros: None

I am a 32 year old Morgan mare and my stable pal Naughty is 15 (also a Morgan). We hate bugs! Our mom has tried everything to keep us comfortable but the sprays are sticky and really mess up our mane and hair, and they usually smell terrible too. Mom bought Shoo Tags at the Equine Affaire for us and we just "hoped" for the best. They really worked good. We had to cover our ears and eyes from the no seeum bugs, but the other bugs didn't bother us half as much. We were able to spend more time in the pasture without being bugged.Mom is ordering more and we've told all our friends about Shoo Tag. Thanks Jade and Naughty

Used this on 3 of my horses. Lost one within the first week. Lost second on the next week. I don't know when the third one was lost. My horses are in stalls at night and turned out during the day. Does this product work? Maybe. For the cost of these tags, I think they need to think of another way to attach them. I braided the tags in their manes. I even hide them under the mane a little, so the other horses wouldn't bite at the tags. I don't turn my horses out with halters on, so that is not an option. I'm not saying that these tags don't work. they might. But I'm not going to try them again, unless I know I can keep the tags on.

I tried a few times to keep this tag tied into my horses mane, and it never stayed for longer than a couple of days - finally it got lost out there in the pasture.
