This review is from: Shoot to Kill : A Soldier's Journey Through Violence (Paperback)
The title is misleading.
This is a grubby story of the kinds of institutionalized bullying young men endure early and then perpetuate on others. There is nothing here reported on shooting or sniping technique. No tips, suggestions or instructions for enhancing ones marksmanship. No reason is given for the title, nor for the instruction itself. I anticipated at least a reasoned discussion for favoring a killing shot over a wounding or incapacitating shot, but not even that was offered. This is an autobiographic look at British basic military preparation and advanced training in the last third of the 20th century focusing on its most sordid practices. It is a story of institutional dehumanization and it is to the credit of the author that he grew beyond its limits. |
