Book Description

Relying on 50 years of muzzleloading hunting experiences in all parts of the U.S. with occasional trips to Europe and Africa, Wm. Hovey Smith delivers candid and practical advice on muzzleloading guns ranging from Japanese matchlocks to the most modern in-line rifles and pistols. Never restricted to a given type or hunting or make of gun, he presents information on guns from many makers of replica muzzleloaders as well as on a number of originals that are now available on the U.S. market. As may be seen in the list of chapters that follows, the book is comprehensive in its coverage, unusual in its approach and full or useful information for the hunter, shooter and owners of muzzleloading guns of all sorts. The 17 chapters in the book are: 1. Choosing between today's muzzleloading powders, 2. Managing percussion and electric ignition systems, 3. Twenty-one steps to flintlock success, 4. Tyrrany of the match: Shooting matchlock guns, 5. Shooting the percussion revolver, 6. Muzzleloaders and round balls: How effective are they?, 7. Muzzleloading bullets and shot placement: Big and slow vs. light and fast, 8. Home casting bullets, 9. Shooting sabots and such, 10. Are 150 grain charges useful in today's in-line muzzleloaders?, 11. Weatherproofing your muzzleloader, 12. The fumble factor in muzzleloader hunting, 13. The four levels of muzzleloading accuracy: What they are and how to achieve them, 14. Cleaning your muzzleloader, 15. Storing muzzleloading guns, 16. Muzzleloading accessories and 17. Getting your new muzzleloader ready to hunt in one day. The book contains 20 illustrations and links to YouTube videos.

More About the Author

As a Professional Geologist and an Outdoor Writer, I have had the opportunity to live and hunt over most of North America. I was always interested in outdoor writing and sold my first articles in the 1970s and have continued with newspaper, magazine and book writing every since. I have done beat reporting for regional newspapers, been published in more than 80 different publications and now have produced 15 books and most recently both screen and stage plays.

I am taken by the unusual and try to work what I see as the underserved portions of the market. This was the case with "Practical Bowfishing," "Crossbow Hunting," and "Backyard Deer Hunting: Converting deer to dinner for pennies per pound" and "X-Treme Muzzleloading: Fur, Fowl and Dangerous Game with Muzzleloading Rifles, Pistols and Smoothbores." All of these titles are now also available as E-books for all popular readers. New in 2013 is a series of eight "Muzzle Short Shot Books" which are "Muzzleloaders for Hunters," "Shooting and Maintaining your Muzzleloader," "Buying Used Muzzleloading Guns," "Hunting with Muzzleloading Shotguns and Smoothbore Muskets," "Hunting with Muzzleloading Pistols," "Hunting with Muzzleloading Revolvers," "Muzzleloading Guns for Self Defense," and "Building/Restoring Your Muzzleloader."

My work in print media continues and I am a Contributing Editor for Gun Digest covering muzzleloading guns and also write fairly commonly for Knife World and other publications.

One new useful adjunct to book is my blogs and nearly 250 YouTube videos which I use to update topics and show color photographs that were too expensive to publish in my books. These can be accessed through my website, www.hoveysmith.com or you can go directly to the blog that I post most often at http//www.hoveysmith.wordpress.com. In any of my publications you are apt to find some hardware-related information, some interesting stories, practical information on game processing and cooking instructions - all told from first-hand experiences. If I have not done the deed, I am giving you the words straight from the mouths of those who have.

Two radio shows "The Backyard Sportsman" and "Hovey's Outdoor Adventures" were produced from 2010-2013. Both are hunting related with "Adventures" being more of an entertainment show done in voice and character/s. Episodes are currently available on Apple iTunes with free downloads. One of these shows "My Home Town" is available as a CD from my website www.hoveysmith.com.
