Editorial Reviews

Review

"For anyone in a creative and artistic profession it is essential to be continually inspired and challenged. The best creative souls establish mentors, collaborate with peers, and work on projects that stretch and expand their skills. Another solid source of inspiration include magazines, blogs and books. One such book that provides a wealth of information for the professional and amateur photographer alike is Shooting with Soul by Alessandra Cave." - Examiner.com

"I love that Alessandra is really encouraging readers and participants of Shooting with Soul to capture unique traits about themselves. No two people carry around the exact same items in their purse, backpack or wallet. What do those contents say about you and your life? As you make your way through Shooting with Soul, your photography skills will improve as well as, Alessandra says, 'find a window into your soul.' Her exercises encourage you to slow down, take a look around, and capture what means the most to you." - UPPERCASE Magazine

About the Author

Originally from Brazil, Alessandra Cave thought all she needed was a camera and a backpack, until her round the world travels revealed a fierce love for texture, light, and design, as old as the stories she once called home. After working for over 10 years as a producer in the film industry, in 2009, Alessandra kissed the cubicle goodbye to pursue her dream of working as a professional photographer. She currently lives in San Francisco and splits her time between commercial and editorial photography assignments, teaching workshops at creative retreats, and raising her amazing daughter, who is her biggest creative achievement to date. Alessandra holds a Master in Arts degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design, but she considers herself completely self-taught when it comes to photography. A former contributor to Shutter Sisters, the widely acclaimed photo-blog celebrating women photographers, Alessandra is passionate about inspiring and empowering women to pick up the camera and follow their creative dreams. As Amazon could tell you, I'm a little bit of a photography nerd, and I probably own too many photography books. I never wrote any reviews though. But this book is different. It has a soul! The author's voice is as delightful as her images, and her playful and curious study of equipment, light, composition (and more generally life!) is simply contagious... I learned a few new tips, but most importantly I felt inspired. Poetry for the eyes.

I'm getting another one as a gift for my best friend :)

I'm a self-dubbed "Snap Shot Hobbyist," because "professional" seems too intimidating when you're searching for helpful information regarding how to best utilize your camera. This book is the BEST I've come across. Not at all intimidating, the author does not talk down to the reader, and the instructions she provides are clear, sensible, and easy to follow. The accommodating prompts are inspiring. Excellent publication, well put together. If you're looking to take your "hobby" OR profession a step further and don't quite know where or how to get started, THIS book will certainly get you on track. So take the book and camera at hand, and have FUN "Shooting with SOUL."

I bought this book over the summer because I realised I only seemed to take photos for work and not of my personal life. I just wasn't that inspired with things at home. But we took a trip to France and I took the book with me and ended up completing half the book on the trip. I was so inspired by everything around me and the book helped me to see things from a different perspective. I even think that it's had an affect in my professional work, too. So I would recommend this to anyone who needs new inspiration in their professional or private lives, or even if you're just looking for a fun photo project!

This is a very well-written and well-organized creative book for amateur and professional photographers alike. It has step-by-step suggestions for subject matter, composition, lighting, and use of several different camera types. It also gives prompts for furthering one's creative adventures with photography. All of the illustrations are excellent examples and the layout is superb. I hope that Ms. Cave will follow through with a sequential book in the future. I love all of the pertinent quotations throughout the book which are most inspirational!

What I love about Shooting With Soul is there are weekly excercises of taking photographs and reflection for each weeks prompts. The reflections are about you and your own life with photography assignments to tell your own story. It has beautiful photographs throughout. It is both enlightening and fun. Can't wait to see if the author turns it into an online class. If so...I'm in!

So. This delightful book is unusual in that it focuses on the why and how of picture-taking. You know how you want to get that illusive photo--the one you KNOW you can get, if only?... Well, you're much more bound to get it after reading this book than others purporting to teach you the EXACT technique of it all. In Alessandra's book, you focus on telling a story--complete with feelings and emotions--and believe me, this comes across in the pictures (and the wonderful text and included quotes!). I recently met Alessandra, and she's as delightful as her book. LOVE when that happens!

I have a lot of photography books and they seem to run together after a while. This was a refreshingly creative book. There is good information to help direct your photography skills and I love the 44 creative exercises. I often look through lists like that and think that I would maybe do two or three of the prompts. I actually plan to try all of the ideas in this book!
