Total waste of time and money!,
This review is from: Shop Fox D2058 Adjustable Extra Heavy-duty Mobile Base (Tools & Home Improvement)
At near, but under rated capacity, the base sagged so much that the stoppers engaged the floor. I removed the stoppers, but it was still near impossible to move around, due to the distorted framework, squashed wheels, and the bearings/castors not being up to the task. The bolts supplied were of the poorest quality; they stripped with little provocation. My HTC bases always worked flawlessly , I regret that I tried these Shop Foxes at all. Grizzly advertizes them as Wood Magazine's "Editor's Choice" so I gave them a try... BIG MISTAKE. Grizzly (and Wood Magazine) have their head in the sand on this product. When I asked to send them back, Grizzly wanted me to pay for shipping and restock. I resolved the problem myself by welding the frame together and getting harder stronger wheels at Tractor Supply. Wake-up Grizzly! 0 stars on this product. This product may perform at a fraction, say one half, of its rated capacity, but I simply wouldn't trust it, not even to be level! Save yourself a lot of heartache and go with HTC from the start... HTCs are worth every penny and more that you pay for them. Live and learn.... I hope this helps someone.

Decent mobile base with few wrinkles to iron out,

I purchased this mobile base along with the longer, extension bars ($29) for my 700-pound jointer/planer combo machine. Since this is my first mobile base of this type, I cannot compare this to other brands like HTC. My initial inspection of the parts was that this was a heavy-duty unit capable of handling heavy machines. Instruction book was very well written with decent number of photos. It took me about two hours to assemble and place the mobile base under the jointer/planer. Majority of the time was spent trying to elevate the heavy machine. This was a very difficult task. Shop Fox recommends the user assemble the mobile base before putting it under the equipment. Some of the negative points were: (1) There were too many hardware pieces like bolts, nuts and washers for assembly. Putting them on wasn't difficult, but rather tedious. (2) Bolts were made of cheap metal. I stripped the thread on two of the bolts and couldn't get them out of the attachment bars. Just remember not to over-tighten them. (3) Since I purchased the longer, extension bars, I'm stuck with two shorter ones that came with the unit. They're nice, but have no use for them. (4) Mobile base doesn't roll as effortlessly as I had imagined. The weight of the unit could be a factor. The casters come as two stationary and two swivel. Locking the casters require turning two plastic knobs. Overall it's not a bad unit, but I might look into HTC for my other machines.

Sorry Grizzly, this is simply not a good effort on your part! The metal walls are incredibly thin for something supposed to be heavy duty. I expected at least 1/4" but instead it is less than 1/8" thick. The welds are okay but the overall design leaves much to be desired. The casters are sure to be troublesome as they do not have ball-bearings in the wheel hubs but bushings instead - that will make moving anything heavy a greater chore. The extension tubes do not mate with the corner brackets very snuggly and have lots of slop in them. And the real kicker - if this is the model that is capable of carrying 1200# then what the heck is the G7314 made out of? I think the Delta Universal Mobile Base has fittings every bit as strong as what is included here and maybe even more so. And Delta rates this base at only 300# capacity! Very disappointed and highly recommend you think twice before making a purchase.

I bought this base for my 18" Oliver planer, which weighs around 1000 pounds without the motor. I was pleased to see that the mobile base didn't break when I lowered the planer onto it. However, it takes two men and a boy to push the planer around the shop. In my mind that's not very mobile, and I haven't even put the motor on yet! This is the 4th Shop Fox brand base I've assembled. You do have some assembly options when it comes to caster orientation, which is a nice feature. But the steel is not rugged enough. For instance, the extensions are tapped to accept a bolt and with very little torque the threads strip. Also, the hardware is metric. This is America and this product is intended for woodworkers who probably have a limited number of wrenches and sockets, let alone metric! It also leads to frustration when you are missing a nut, which has happened to me. I ended up buying some heavy-duty casters and replaced the junk original ones. It's still not as good as an HTC. If I had been thinking, I would have returned the darn thing and had an HTC base made for it.

I put a 20" harbor freight drill press (about 275#) on this base with an additional 150 # of tooling stored on the bottom. Base works great; no deflection; very solid; easy to move on a smooth concrete floor. A couple of the reviews for this unit speak of plastic wheels breaking up and caster interference, but they must have this model confused with some other unit. My D2058A base came with very heavy machined cast iron wheels and the two casters can be rotated a full 360 degrees with absolutely no interference to anything. Assembly was easy for something this heavy and so completely size adjustable but I will agree that the screws that come with the unit are terrible! They are very, very, soft and will twist off with the slightest over torque. The poor quality fasteners is my only complaint about an otherwise great mobile base. I plan on buying another one, and would highly recommend it to anyone.

The steel wheels make this a "buy," but be sure to order the matching rails if you need the extensions - the rails offered by Amazon were for the "old" Fox base, and at much greater expense I had to purchase these rails from Grizzly (recommended by Fox). Amazon did take back the rails that did not fit with no issues. Hopefully Amazon has already fixed this issue.

The quality of the Shop Fox D2058 mobile base has gone down since the last mobile base I purchased 10 years ago (smaller but same design).I had to run a tap (12x1.5 mm)into the threaded holes for the jackscrews used to lock the unit into place, they were so badly machined, that they would have damaged the threads on the screws. For a woodworker without metric taps, this is not good. And like the others, the machine installed on this base takes so much force to move. The wheels are cast iron, not rubber so there's no reason for this effort. Just junk manufacturing and materials. Stuck with the damn thing now. Should have researched more, but could not imagine they would value engineer all the quality out of what used to be very good products. Woodstock International needs to rethink this, but best would be to see them out of business. Also assembly manual is generic to all mobile bases, and had assembly locking nuts that were not required for this base.

Not Mobile nor Heavy Duty,
This review is from: Shop Fox D2058 Adjustable Extra Heavy-duty Mobile Base (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought a 25 year old Powermatic 66 Table saw and got this on a whim to get the saw out of my van and into the garage. It was a complete waste of time and money. Once assembled and saw loaded it sagged in the middle. Only two wheels would turn and the others just froze up and would not move beyond a certian piont. Also the rubber pads on the bottom of the stops came off. I ended up just adding some nice locking wheels to the bottom of my saw and put this thing away thinking the saw was just beyond its capacity. Then last week I bought a 6" jet jointer and thought I would give it a try on something lighter. Well, the same thing happened. The wheels froze and would not move. They also do not turn all the way around. The back of them catches on the frame. Very poor design. Going to gets some wheels for my jointer and sell this piece of junk on craigs list.

I only wish I had read the previous reviews before I bought this base. Grizzly should drop the "Super" and "Heavy" from the title. I have a low-end Delta table saw on mine (less than 200 pounds) and the cheap plastic caster wheels disintegrated after just a few months use. Also, as mentioned the metal is thin and poorly fitted and the bolts are cheap pot metal and strip easily. This base is not suitable for any application I can envision. |
