I'm one of the few who will give this item a good rating, but I also have a good reason why. As a person who has done a lot of remodeling in her home while also living in it, I have tried to keep the level of dust down as much as possible by vacuuming the area often and using a sander like this. The last two projects I used a sander by another manufacturer, which had decent results but was limited due to hose length. (It didn't come with a length of hose, whereas this one does.) It was designed to use the screen sand paper, which works well for allowing the dust to be sucked into the vacuum.

I didn't buy this item from Amazon, but from a local major home improvement retailer for about the same price. I'm glad I didn't read Amazon's reviews, otherwise I would never have bought it. I read the reviews at that retailer's website, and one reviewer gave a tip on using a 1/4" drill bit to put holes in the base. They also used the screened sandpaper, as obviously you can't suck dust through a piece of paper sandpaper. Other reviewers saw that post and did the same, and said it totally transformed the product into a usable device. So, I coughed up the $35 w/tax and permanently modified the device, drilling about 10 holes into the pad. With that and the screened sandpaper, I finished a 10x12 room from floor to ceiling with minimal dust. I could tell just how well it worked as I hand sanded the corners with a foam corner sander, and a rainstorm of dust fell to the floor. In areas where I used the modified Shop-Vac sander, there was very little dust.

You also need a decent vacuum with enough HP to have enough suction, otherwise you will have lack-luster results. I used an 8 gallon Shop-Vac with a filtration bag meant for drywall dust. The bag is a MUST, and are found for a pretty good price on Amazon.

Why only 4 out of 5 stars? Well, I shouldn't have to modify it myself. C'mon. But I wasn't afraid to!

I was trying to find a decent dustless hand sander for drywall, since I do quite a bit of repair work for others and it can make quite a mess. This isn't it! The design is really poor. Ideally a tool like this should have a "perforated" plate with channels that allow the vacuum suction to do its thing with a drywall sanding screen. Instead, the plate is solid and Shop-Vac provides sandpaper sheets with the tool (and no screens), so the vacuum action is apparently supposed to work around the edges. Dust was still flying everywhere, since the sander wasn't effective. This "dustless" sander is getting returned for a refund.

Tried it and I'm taking it back to the store. Tons of dust falls to the ground and it feels very awkward in the hand with it's rigid unpadded handle. It's just a very poor design with the solid backing on it. There seem to be much better designs on the market according to Amazon reviews so I'm going to try a highly rated one. Thy this one instead: http://www.amazon.com/MARSHALLTOWN-Premier-VS792-Vacuum-Sander/dp/B000VXBYPQ/ref=cm_cr-mr-title

Tried this for a day, and am now returning it. As other reviewers said, the design is poor. It attempts to suction the dust from around the edges of the pad, and that just isn't going to work. I'd borrowed a friend's one that has holes in the pad and suctions directly through there. That worked great, and left no dust that I could see. Now, that wasn't a large job, but neither was the job I attempted to use this Shop Vac one on. So, if you're looking to eliminate most of the dust, bypass this one and find one that suctions through the pad.
