Careful when Buying...,

This review is from: Shopaholic Abroad (Paperback)
Of course, this is book is good, but it's the same as Shopaholic Takes Manhattan! It's just a different title for the UK. I thought I'd discovered some UK-only releases of Becky's adventures, but alas, now I need to return it.

Even Funnier Than the Original,
By
This review is from: Shopaholic Takes Manhattan (Paperback)
Don't worry that this sequel might be a letdown from "Confessions of a Shopaholic". I thought it was even better. Becky Bloomwood is back, this time with her television career going well, her love life in great shape ... but, with those old spending habits as strong as ever. Accompanying her boyfriend to the States, she hits New York City like a whirlwind and injects more than a little money into the NY economy. The plot of this book is, I think, quite a bit stronger than the first book with a little intrigue lurking in the background. If you've ever enjoyed a good shopping spree in New York (or have ever dreamed of having one), you will love her exploits. I read this book in a 24 hour period - I laughed and laughed and just couldn't get enough of it.

I Laughed Till I Hurt; Funniest Book I've Ever Read,
By
This review is from: Shopaholic Takes Manhattan (Paperback)
I first fell in love with Becky Bloomwood in "Confessions of A Shopaholic." I have been looking forward to the sequel, but was afraid it might be just a lame extension of a story that had already been told. How wrong I was! This is funnier than the original (a hard act to follow) and Becky continues to be the designer-loving fashion plate who was born to shop. Life looks good for Becky as she spouts financial advice on her tv show, finds romance with Luke, and continues to wrap her bank manager Derek Smeath around her pinkie. But when Mr. Smeath retires from Endwich Bank and Luke announces he wants to make it big in New York, big changes are in store(literally) for Becky. She takes to New York like an angel to heaven, or as she so succintly says, "These are my people. I've found my homeland." Becky has never been happier and the reader is treated to Becky hyperventilating at a Prada sample sale, seeing the Guggenheim in a unique way, winning the attention of employees at Barney's, all while taking a three-hour group walking tour of New York that turns into a thousand dollar shopping day when the tour director invites them to enter a magnificent place of worship and Becky enters Saks rather than St. Patrick's. But an unplanned event sends Becky into a depression and destroys her relationship with Luke. Will Becky recover? How will she muddle through without job or boyfriend? Will the new bank manager succumb to her charms or demand full payment? Is it possible for Becky to live up to her own catch phrase she preaches to her loyal viewers, "Look after your money...and your money will look after you." Every page is filled with Beckyisms, wise words on shopping that are hysterically funny in light of our heroine's "tragic flaw." Will Becky rise from the ashes? Can she win the battle of the charge cards and live a debt-free life? From London to New York, to my mind there's not a more endearing heroine than Becky Bloomwood nor a more compelling contemporary writer of "chick lit" than the witty Sophie Kinsella. Pick up a copy of this book and I guarantee you'll smile every time you see a Denny and George scarf or a Vera Wang dress.

Fall in Love with Becky Bloomwood All Over Again,
By
This review is from: Shopaholic Takes Manhattan (Paperback)
Just when we thought Becky Bloomwood had her life in order, when we thought she had paid her bills and curbed her shopping habits...she strikes again! When Becky Bloomwood finds herself stumbling upon her "homeland" in the hottest shopping districts of Manhattan, we can hardly expect her to pass up on all of the savings! From desinger sample sales to visiting the Guggenheim, Becky will find a way to shop without "really spending 'real' money!" In this sequel to Confessions of a Shopaholic you will experience yet another ride in Becky's shopping roller coaster. This sequel was just as funny as it's predecessor. How is Becky and Luke's relationship coming along? Can the couple make it in the big city where life is more fast paced and chaotic than London? Will Becky be able to say no to the new Clementine sandals or Vera Wang cocktail dress? This book is laugh out loud funny and for any gal who loves to shop, you won't be able to put it down. Shopaholic Takes Manhattan is funny and entertaining from cover to cover~

Shopaholic Wins Again,

I got this book from the bookstore I work at as an advanced reading copy.....I was completely estactic when I saw it on the counter and started reading it as soon as I got home that night. This book is more hilarious and funny than the first.Kinsella writes a view from the shopaholic perfectly. This book has more closure than the first, and that makes me like it more. Becky Bloomwood does it again, doesn't she? Read this book now! I urge you to run out and get it....absolutely amazing!

Not a Shopaholic,
By Kool Fool (Umpteenth) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shopaholic Takes Manhattan (Paperback)
I haven't read Confessions of a Shopaholic, but the local library I went to didn't have it, so I took this book in spite of everything. I thought it was going to be a fun, light reading.
Well, it started out okay. I remember that I went reading the first few chapters straight and even laughed. After awhile, however, it gets tiring. It's hard to feel sympathy toward Becky, the main character, because she's such a spendthrift and is so shallow on top of it. Seems like she has nothing else on her mind but shop, shop, and shop. I don't know how she got her problem fixed in the first book, but undoubtedly she didn't learn any lesson. In any case, I eventually finished the book, but it's not like I was excited about it. I don't think I'm gonna read the rest of the trilogy. :(

Becky Bloomwood, heroine of the novel "Confessions of a Shopaholic," is back! She paid off her bills, got a killer job as a financial advisor on her favorite morning TV show and has a wonderful boyfriend, Luke! When he tells her he is contemplating moving to New York, she is a little unsure. They decide to take a two week trip there to check it out and once Becky arrives, she is in love with the city! She finds Bloomindales and Barneys and sample sales and Vera Wang, she thinks she's died and gone to heaven! She starts spending money like crazy .. and ends up getting herself in even bigger trouble than she did last time back in London. I absolutely loved this novel. I read it the same night I read Confessions of a Shopaholic and I thought they were both hilarious. Becky is a very likeable character with thought processes we can ALL relate to! The writing is fast paced and I managed to read this entire book in a couple of hours. My only problem with the book is that I wish the author (Sophie Kinsella) had spent more time on the relationship between Luke and Becky and a tad bit less time on shopping mishaps. Even so, it was a fun novel that I thoroughly enjoyed. I highly recommend reading it! It's one of those books that's so fun and fast, its hard to put down once you start reading!

I don't know what it is about this writer, but I bought AND read all of her books in a 4-5 month period. I NEVER do that, especially if I know that I have all of the books because I don't like to read a book over and over. I read these as slow as possible and used it as a luxurious escape. Great fun and highly recommended!! GET THEM ALL!!!!! Make sure you read the Shopaholic ones in order though... Have fun!!!

It's adorable,

But I didn't find it as funny as the first one. Maybe it's because I am not one for fashion and shopping ~~ so the excitement of all the shopping just whizzes over my head. But I do have to admit, it's adorable reading and I had a blast reading it in an afternoon! Becky follows Luke to New York and while there, bought out the entire city (or so it seems) only to face problems with the creditors again ~~ and caused problems for Luke's new business endeavor. My favorite part of the whole book was the trip to the spa with Luke's mom ~~ it was something unreal and totally unexpected ~~ and funny. I am looking forward to reading about Becky and Luke's preparations for the wedding ~~ being newly married that is something I can totally relate to!!! So I am hoping for a third book as well ~~ and hopefully, it'll be funnier than this one is! (P.S. Nothing quite beats the first book ~~ now that was a fun take on shopping and romance!) 4-5-02

Rebecca Bloomwood does it again.,

More antics from our favorite spender, the girl who knows how to spend a dollar or a pound from continent to continent. Becky has some of the best rationalization skills when it comes to her needs, or should I say wants. She will have you laughing all the way to the bank a place her money never seems to end up.This follow up book to Kinsella's debut novel CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC is a wonderful piece of light hearted banter with a main character that leaves you wanting to shake some sense into her, while her heart of gold makes her contagious to a fault. The problem with Becky is she just can't say no, not only to spending, but also to people and their demands. This fault in her character leads her into some hysterically tight spots. This light-hearted read packs a punch on the humor Richter scale. I promise it will keep you smiling long after the fact. Kelsana 1/31/02 |
