When JAKE MORTENSEN and his 'always ready to party' crew are sent to Mexico to retrieve a stolen 50-foot ketch called SHORE LOSER, his first venture as a repo-yacht captain places his three friends in danger and almost gets him killed in the process. He doesn't know it, but concealed on board SHORE LOSER is a package so valuable some San Diego businessmen would resort to murder to recover it and others would be shocked if they knew what it contained. While trying to protect the boat and his crew, Jake discovers the hidden goods, exposes an investment scam that rocks the San Diego yachting community, helps catch the bad guys, and learns the real reason why the Russians were unable to participate in the '95 America's Cup.
As a contributing writer to West Coast sailing magazines, Douglas Danielson is a recognized authority on boating in Southern California, Mexico and Central America. His mystery and horror short stories have appeared on the internet and in print anthologies in the United States and Britain. He lives with his wife in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Douglas Allen Danielson--husband, father, automotive machinist, draftsman, architect, USCG licensed captain, marine surveyor, adventurer, freelance writer--a man with careers of varying success in each of these endeavors.
Mr. Danielson began sailing in 1970 on a Coronado 27' when dared by a friend. Since that time he has owned three sailing yachts: a Santana 27', Santana 35', and Norseman 447. From 1978 to 1985 Mr. Danielson and his family raced and cruised their Santana 35' off the coasts of California and Mexico, and he has a wall of trophies to prove it. In 1989, Doug and his wife Karen sailed "TSUNAMI", their Norseman 447, double-handed from San Diego, California to Waikiki, Hawaii, completing the crossing and coming in fifth place in the San Diego YC Race For Life; raising money for trauma research and education in Waikiki and San Diego.
By this time it was obvious that sailing and the marine industry was Mr. Danielson's true passion. In 1992 Doug retired from the practice of architecture to pursue his avocation full-time. He is a highly proficient captain with extensive experience on both power and sailing vessels. He has piloted the waters of the Pacific Coast from Vancouver to Hawaii to the Panama Canal. He has also made passages through the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, the Bahamas, and the Intercoastal waters of Florida. He is a knowledgeable marine surveyor, experienced mechanic, meticulous navigator, good cook, and published writer.
Now on his third career, Mr. Danielson lives in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, with his wife, Karen. He has been writing freelance articles for West Coast boating magazines since 1997. His mystery and horror short stories have been published by Orchard Press Mysteries, Cenotaph, Futures Mystery Anthology Magazine, Lighthouse Media, Sonar4 Publications and Nightfall Publications.
Doug is presently busy writing a nautical mystery/adventure series about a young San Diego yacht captain who can't seem to stay away from trouble and beautiful women. His first in the series, SHORE LOSER, was published in August 2007 and will be re-released by Oak Tree Press in February 2012. The second in the series, WET DREAMS, was published in August 2009. Both are available at marine and independent bookstores or through retailers on the internet. His website can be found at www.doug-danielson.com
I truly enjoyed this book, even if I was expecting more about sailing adventure than a criminal plot. It is easy to read, interesting, and a good read.

I have been sailing and working on the ocean for 42 years, and I have made the trip that the boat 'Shore Loser' makes in this book. Doug Danielson knows his seamanship and locations. I also like the way he developes his characters, Jake, Buddy, Wanda, and Toey. I highly recommend this book if you like fast-paced suspense and a very enjoyable story.

In fairness to the reader of this review, I have know Douglas "Doug" Danielson since high school. Many years ago, he presented an early draft of Shore Loser to me for my review, I could barely get through the first two chapters ... that must have been 10 years ago ... well, times have changed!
Shore Loser is a solid story, well told. When I read the published edition I entered the world of Jake Mortensen and his friends with caution. I was soon impressed, however, with the natural (as if you are there) description of their characters and quickly became intrigued with the drama that began to unfold, not like a high powered race-car in the Indianapolis 500 (like so many formula novels) but like a finely tuned 12-meter sailboat sailing upwind ... carefully, strategically, tacking back and forth as it moves toward its mark
By the end of the story Jake and his buddies (especially Toey) were my friends and I was sad to see them leave. I look forward to their return.
