Book Description

October 22, 2003

Emily Dickinson, Lucille Clifton, Rachel Carson, and Gretel Ehrlich: They hail from different regions, employ widely divergent writing styles, and are not known primarily as nature writers. Yet in Shorewords, Susan A. C. Rosen has compiled an imaginative and beautifully balanced anthology of selections from these and more than forty other important writers connected by their love for the coastline. Edna St. Vincent Millay's "Low Tide," E. Annie Proulx's "Cast Away," Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Naomi," and Ursula Le Guin's "Text" are among the diverse pieces that reveal the writers' common fascination with the people and places at water's edge. Organized thematically, Shorewords reflects women's experiences of living along the coast through a wide range of material, including short fiction, poetry, and excerpts from novels and memoirs. All reveal the rich response to shorelines women writers have expressed -- and continue to express -- in poetry and prose.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Here, Rosen collects dozens of pieces expressing the praise, wonder, fear and longing that being on the shore can inspire. The editor, an English professor at Maryland's Anne Arundel Community College who writes frequently on American literature and the environment, divides her book into themes including "growing up coastal," "working along the shorelines" and the beach as a seductive space. A selection from Joan Didion's The White Album explores the lives of lifeguards and orchid breeders who work in Malibu, a place that "tends to astonish and disappoint those who have never seen it." E. Annie Proulx shares chapters from The Shipping News that follow a fragmented family's move to Newfoundland. Jennifer Ackerman's piece from Notes on the Shore observes birds on the Delaware Bay. Other authors present poems, journal entries and stories, making this a wide-ranging collection a fitting celebration of life along the water's edge, and a good choice for anyone heading to the beach.
