Special Features

  • Alternate Audio & Video Tracks
  • DVD-ROM Content
  • Titles Include:
  • 1) SILENT RAIN IN THE NINTH is a day in the life of a compulsive gambler who is facing old age and the opinions of others. If you have ever been short on the rent or just like playing the ponies, this film hits close to home.  Alternate audio track gives you filmmaker commentary, PLUS an additional track with an alternate audio track. Find the 'Easter Egg'. 2) MULTI-FACIAL brought actor / director Vin Diesel to the attention of Steven Spielberg, who promptly cast him in "Saving Private Ryan". Through a series of auditions, a young actor in New York City struggles with his identity. Based on real life events in the life of Vin. Additional track of Vin's work on "Iron Giant", plus six additional interview tracks
  • 3) BUY MY FILM presents a blatant plea in mixed media animation by a filmmaker who really wants to sell out and go commercial. 4) THAT STRANGE PERSON is a bizarre trip through the thoughts of a woman who wonders who she is and who she could become. Color cut-out and cel animation gives the viewer a dreamy sense of vertigo.  Alternate audio track of director's commentary. 5) THE JOB is a close look at racism based on an actual conflict in a Texas fishing town in the early 1970's. An Elvis impersonator and a "good ole boy" set out on a job for the boss, the nature of which becomes chillingly clear. Alternate video track of original storyboard animation, plus additional "True Story" track. 6) ERIK FRIEDLANDER, contemporary jazz cellist, tells us the story of how he began his career, discusses his new album "Topaz", and shares his creative process of composing and the joy of performing with his unique band. 7) ALSO: Play VIRTUAL CRAPS  and take a trip to THE WOODSHED

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The "diversity" in this edition of Short refers to ethnic diversity, not a diverse array of films on view. Unfortunately, this batch isn't nearly as compelling as the previous DVDs in the series. Of the six shorts presented, the most intriguing are "Buy My Film," a 1995 mixed-media contribution from director John Schnall, and Saving Private Ryan actor Vin Diesel's "Multi-Facial" are the most intriguing, clever, and palatable of the lot, though Diesel's extra goodies--six interviews and a bit called "Vin Works on Iron Giant"--reek of commercialism and self-promotion. As is the case with all the Short editions, the Sound Bit section, here with jazz cellist Erik Friedlander, is a must-watch. But Short 5 is also plagued by the spate of consumer-driven spots and ads that open each film, and they taint the entire package with a television mentality, ignoring the real purpose of the series--to promote short films as an art form. --Paula Nechak

5.0 out of 5 stars Vin is Brilliant, March 21, 2000
This review is from: Short 5 - Diversity (DVD)
Vin Diesel is excellent, they guy knows how to make a movie. Something as short as this, his first, was cool. It didnt look cheap. It made it's point. About Vin, and how he tries to pass as black, Italian, Latino in various auditions..I wont ruin it for you just go watch it. it's good. The l'il xtras-self interview type thing is okeedokee, interesting bits. And the Iron Giant voice works is a TREAT! Ladies: Drool Factor 10!

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll Fall for Vin for SURE, September 29, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Short 5 - Diversity (DVD)
I was already smitten with Vin Diesel when I bought this...but seeing Multi Facial clinched it. There's something so magnetic about this man. A stunning physical specimen, certainly - but it's more than that. There's strength, vulnerability, intelligence, sensitivity. He's the real deal. And if that VOICE doesn't set you on fire, ladies....check to see if you're still breathing!
