useful but not for the details,

This review is from: Short Bike Rides in New Jersey, 4th (Short Bike Rides Series) (Paperback)
This review is based on one ride from the book -- Cheesequake State Park -- which I did with my family today. The ride was fun and corresponded well to the description, so I was glad to have bought the book. However, the suggested route for this particular ride is a puzzling choice as it starts in a parking lot at the edge of the park and requires riding on busy roads for about ten minutes to the entrance to the park. There are two much better alternatives: either to park in one of the many parking lots inside the park itself, or to take the hiking trail that starts from the suggested parking lot into the trees for about 25 feet, where it connects to the end of Booth Field Road, part of the suggested route within the park (note this part of the road is not paved so you would need a hybrid or mountain bike). Mid-October would be about perfect for the foliage; our ride on 8 November was a bit late for the full fall color. We will be careful to study the routes for the other rides on Google Maps before we try them!

Desperately needs updating!,

As the previous reviewer, this is based on one ride. Mine was the Monmouth Battlefield Park ride. Parking was limited at the park. Despite the 9 am opening time, the park still wasn't open at 9:30 am. On the last leg of the tour, the road splits. The book gives no indication which route to take. (Take the right fork to get on Rt 33 to go back to the park.)
The landscape of New Jersey is changing rapidly. This book was last updated in 1998 and unfortunately, there aren't any more recent books available that I know of. The author talks about bucolic settings but at 9 am on a Sunday morning, there was plenty of traffic and not much attention to devote to the scenery. Wait until the next edition comes out. |
