Biography

Robert Wyatt is a rare bird. His remarkable career began forty years ago drumming and singing for Soft Machine, a post-psych outfit tied to the “Canterbury Scene” of the late ‘60s that yielded Pink Floyd & Gong among others. His ensuing and far longer solo period speaks volumes
of Wyatt’s value and endurance as an artist.

Editorial Reviews

21 minutes of intimate RW Home recordings. To my ear some of the best he's done for a long time. Blueprint. 2003.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Wonder, October 10, 2009
This review is from: Short Break (Audio CD)
Short Break may not have the wonderfully expansive pieces we all love of Wyatt's other records, and it's not very accessible. Only one song has real words, and even then things aren't exactly coherent. It isn't a finely crafted musical document. It seems like a collection one-off songs, just ideas really - exercises even, as if he was saying "I've not gone away forever, I'm still here, I'm busy with other things; so here, put this on in the mean time. It'll get us through the winter, that is: until the next record comes out whenever." Even despite that it may not have been an honest effort at a real record, it comes to me now (after many repeat listens) as Wyatt's most honest, organic and compelling work. Really. Each song is like a different dream. It turns everything foggy; faces begin to disappear, and voices are not speaking words but singing the tones which shadows sing. It's very alone and very much like the photo on the cover - you don't know where you are or what's going on, but there's mystery, there's wonder, and all the world is green. This really is one of my all-time favorite records.

Also, it's really wonderful accompaniment while taking a long walk at night in the snow.
