Book Description

September 2004
This book/eBook package is your guide to getting more interesting and creative photos with your Canon EOS 20D digital camera. If you want to learn more about the concepts of photography, this book/ebook is for you. It discusses every camera setting in a clear, well-illustrated style, but it also does much more. You'll see why and when you use specific settings, not just how to set them. You’ll find that this guide helps you quickly master your camera so you’ll be getting the kinds of photos you hope for. The book is printed in black & white and has a well-liked spiral binding that lets the book lie flat or be folded back. The accompanying eBook on a CD disc is a printable and searchable full-color version of the same book in Adobe's popular PDF format. It can be read on a PC or Mac using the free Acrobat Reader or any current Web browser.

Just some of the things you'll learn are how to take pictures in fully automatic point and shoot mode and how your camera captures digital images; how to play back and manage your images; use buttons, dials, and menus; control image size and quality; use all of the camera’s exposure modes and exposure controls to get photos that show the scene exactly as it is, or as you want to interpret it; how to control sharpness in your photographs; and how to use focus, depth-of-field, sharpness, softness, and blur creatively. Learn all about light and color and how to use them creatively. Understand how they change throughout the day and seasons, how they’re affected by the weather, and how light’s direction and quality affects highlights and shadows. See how to set white balance to capture colors the way you see them. Learn how to use lenses creatively when photographing scenery, interiors, people, and very small subjects. See how zoom, wide-angle, normal, telephoto, tilt-shift, and macro lenses affect your images. See how to creatively use your built-in and external flash both indoors and out and in good light and bad and how to use studio lighting for product shots and portraits. Explore special techniques such as fill and slow sync flash. See how to shoot continuously, bracket exposures, white balance and flash, control image qualities such as tone, sharpness and hue, select color modes, and use the setup, custom settings, and playback menus. Finally, learn when and why to use the RAW format for the highest possible image quality.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Short Course in Canon EOS 20D, January 17, 2005
This review is from: A Short Course in Canon EOS 20D Photography (Book & CD-ROM) (Spiral-bound)
This book covers much of the information provided in the manual that comes with the camera. However, like most manuals for cameras of the calibre of the 20D, the supplied manual does cast some expectation on the user to have a reasonable knowledge on photography. This book places many aspects of the 20D into context, and how to use the camera effectively and creatively, not just to use the camera (point and shoot). It provides several useful examples on what effects changing settings has. The big advantages are the spiral binding, large print and 2 copies of the book are on the CD (one high resolution version for printing, and a lower resolution for on screen viewing). These do prove handy to print the page your after for taking notes. Highly recommend this book for a beginner/amateur, as it does cover the basics of digital photography, but would be of little value to a professional photographer.

Yes, as stated in other reviews, this book is overpriced given the print quality (which appears to have been "published" at the local Kinko's), and the CD included is essentially worthless, but is there to justify the high price point. All photos are in black and white and printed on cheap, recycled, rough textured paper...no-no's for photography/art books, for sure...

that said, this booklet is for the budding/novice photographer who has perhaps just stepped into the world of SLR photography. It serves that purpose well, giving specific guidelines for situations and effects using the 20D specifically. It IS well-written, although I did miss the quality in the photographs...the book suffers because of this. A book at this price point SHOULD have better print quality, no question.

Overall, I felt satisfied by its' contents, though. I do NOT think that the Canon manuals give the same information, so I really do not agree with the other reviewers who stated that this book is redundant. I would HIGHLY recommend to the authors to drop the price to about $10, leave off the CD, OR print the book in color on higher quality paper if you want to keep the same price. Sure, your margin goes down, but to compete you're gonna have to do this eventually...

1.0 out of 5 stars Over priced manual, September 25, 2005
This review is from: A Short Course in Canon EOS 20D Photography (Book & CD-ROM) (Spiral-bound)
I was dissapointed with quality of the book. I expected the quality to be a little better than just a black and white photo copied spiral bound book. The example pictures in the book would have been better had they been in color. The price of this book is way over priced.
