About the Author

For the past three decades Dennis Curtin has been an editor, author, and publisher in photography and computing. His latest books on digital cameras and digital photography have been widely praised for their quality and simplicity. They have been widely used in schools, by most of the armed services, many police departments, and even a number of major camera companies to train specialists in photography. On the publishing side, Dennis was editor-in-chief of one of Time-Warner's educational divisions and also held similar positions in Prentice-Hall's technology and engineering program and Prentice-Hall International. In those roles, he has worked extensively with Ansel Adams and other leading photographers of our generation. In his roles as publisher, editor, and author Dennis has been fortunate to edit, publish or write many best-selling books in photography and computing.

Customer Reviews

The book is well illustrated and the text is easy to follow.
Carlton T. Wiens
The content appears to be good, but the first impression is of low quality...basically, its a xerox copy of a book that has been spiral bound!
Liz
This is an excellent book for using and explaining the capabilities of the Canon Powershot SX20 IS digital camera.

I love this book, so much so, I bought my first one for my Canon SX10is and now have one for my Canon SX20is. This book is especially more valuable since Canon has chosen NOT to print their full instruction manual for the SX20is (the SX10is DID have one, so what happen?) The book is very detailed on the use and features of this camera and gives great details on photography as well. If you also use the included CD to view the book, you'll discover very resourceful LINKS on the Internet to even greater valuable information. This book is truly a treasure of information in not only learning what this fantastic camera can do and how to use it, but includes valuable instruction on taking photos. I highly recommend it.

I have to confess that my first impression on this book was some kind of "friendly manual" for the SX20 IS, in fact the first 30-40 pages are. From that point on, the book becomes interesting, exploring the basic principles of photography in the context of your new Cannon camera using clear examples and explanations. The book lead you to take your abilities beyond basics exploring the most advanced features of your SX20, but still, it depends on you to get the most out of this short course, it does not teach you how to compose your pictures creatively. That ability is inside of you!!! Don't expect magic!!

This is a great buy and helped a newbie like myself to understand my camera, the technology in it, photography in general and to use all that in an artistic way!!

This book was written very well. It is like a book you would get in a school class. It has been changed in certain chapters to be specific to the Canon Powershot SX20 Is. It does come with a cd for your computer which has a few animations on it but it is the same as the book. The only thing I wish this book has was color photos which would make it easer to understand some of the photo comparisons. If you are just starting out in photography and own the Powershot SX20 IS I would recomend it

This is the best source for simple, complete documentation on any equipment for which they provide a manual. It is my favorite source for documentation. It is a small company but they are very thorough and easy to deal with. I look here first if I need documentation for photography equipment. They don't cover everything, but the things they do cover are done quite well. Give them a try, I think you will be satisfied. I know I have been.

I have the SX20 IS, but felt it had features that I wasn't using. This book helped to fill in some information that I was lacking.
If you are new to digital photography or to a fully adjustable camera, the "short course" may be helpful to you also learn about exposure and some photo techniques. I was hoping for more information specific to this camera, ie. "ISO sweet"; greater than 1+ or - bracketing techniques for HDR. Overall, it was worth the money, I was wishing for a little bit more.

This is an excellent book for using and explaining the capabilities of the Canon Powershot SX20 IS digital camera. I only read the book hard copy and did not yet try the enclosed CD. Besides explaining this specific camera the book serves as an excellent course in photography as well. If you are an old experienced film camera person like me, you will appreciate the excellent explanations of what is required for proper exposure in photography-both film and digital photography. The camera's capabilities are extensive and impressive. The cd can only add to the value of this fine book. It is pretty technically oriented, not an oversimplified book.

This manual contains a LOT oif information, but NO index in the back for quick referals. I can say, though, that it is written well and covers the use and features of the Canon SX20IS in a concise way. I feel itis worth the extra $37 or so to supplement/replace the CD-based manual that comes with the camera.

Since the official manual for the SX 20 is only available on-line which I find inconvenient, it was helpful to have this spiral bound booklet with everything about the camera plus helpful general information on photography. The CD provides video clips to enhance to written information, but the booklet can stand on its own, too.
