Book Description

June 2004
This book/eBook package is your guide to getting more interesting and creative photos with your Nikon D70 digital camera. If you want to learn more about the concepts of photography, this book/ebook is for you. It discusses every camera setting in a clear, well-illustrated style, but it also does much more. You'll see why and when you use specific settings, not just how to set them. You’ll find that this guide helps you quickly master your camera so you’ll be getting the kinds of photos you hope for. The book is printed in black & white and has a well-liked spiral binding that lets the book lie flat or be folded back. The accompanying eBook on a CD disc is a printable and searchable full-color version of the same book in Adobe's popular PDF format. It can be read on a PC or Mac using the free Acrobat Reader or any current Web browser.

Just some of the things you'll learn about are how to take pictures in fully automatic point and shoot mode and how your camera captures digital images; how to play back and manage your images; use buttons, dials, and menus; control image size and quality; use all of the camera’s exposure modes and exposure controls to get photos that show the scene exactly as it is, or as you want to interpret it; how to control sharpness in your photographs; and how to use focus, depth-of-field, sharpness, softness, and blur creatively. Learn all about light and color and how to use them creatively. Understand how they change throughout the day and seasons, how they’re affected by the weather, and how light’s direction and quality affects highlights and shadows. See how to set your camera’s white balance to capture colors the way you see them. Learn how to use lenses creatively when photographing scenery, interiors, people, and very small subjects. See how zoom, wide-angle, normal, telephoto, tilt-shift, and macro lenses affect your images. See how to creatively use your built-in and external flash both indoors and out and in good light and bad. Explore special techniques such as fill and slow sync flash. See how to shoot continuously, bracket exposures, white balance and flash, control image qualities such as tone, sharpness and hue, select color modes, and use the setup, custom settings, and playback menus.

1.0 out of 5 stars Primitive printing of shallow material, September 21, 2004
By
D70 Fan (The Great Southwest) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Short Course in Nikon D70 Photography (book/ebook) (Spiral-bound)
I am returning this book -- the first book of any kind I have returned to Amazon in many years of satisfied shopping.

In my opinion, the book was clearly printed on an ordinary black & white copier [and not a very good one], with very poor [no, terrible] half-tone photo images. Of course, we can always view the PDF file of the book, but that's not what we ordered, is it?

A lot of the material is very shallow: "When not using flash in dim light, you need to support the camera to prevent blur in your images. One way to do this is to lean against a wall or tree and brace yourself with your elbows . . . . . " ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz..........

As I investigated further, because this book looked like a cheap boiler-plate job applied to many different cameras, I discovered that my suspicions may be right -- he has "A Short Course to . . . " for what appears to me to be about 20 different cameras. I wonder how much of the material is identical in each of the books.

Of course, you may find this book to be delightful and informative. I didn't.

And, it costs as much as a ~real~ book . . .

1.0 out of 5 stars What a joke SAVE YOUR $ Read the manual, September 22, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Short Course in Nikon D70 Photography (book/ebook) (Spiral-bound)
This book is nothing more than a reiteration of the manual that comes with the camera. He does throw in some basic photo techiniques and information that anyone buying a $1000 would probably already know. For $35 your money would be more wisely spent on a book dedicated to photographic technique, or taking a basic class. It is a cheap photocopy on cheap paper. I cannot believe the author Dennis Curtain can foist this off as helpful information. I will never order anything from this author.

1.0 out of 5 stars Save your money!, November 7, 2004
This review is from: A Short Course in Nikon D70 Photography (book/ebook) (Spiral-bound)

If you want the examples and photos in this B&W book in color then you have to print out the book's 136 pages from the pdf file on the CD. Of course you pick up the costs in paper and ink and the wear and tear on your printer. WHAT A RIP OFF!!!!
