5.0 out of 5 stars Dennis Curtain Photo Book Nikon D70
Dennis Curtin's explanations and upmost his examples are excellent! I have several books and ebooks from this author. He covers both the technical and aesthetics in a very understandable way. His long legacy which dates back to work with Ansel Adams speaks to his professional dedication. Take a look at his site for yourself, and samples of his books-ebooks. A treasure!

I am returning this book -- the first book of any kind I have returned to Amazon in many years of satisfied shopping.

In my opinion, the book was clearly printed on an ordinary black & white copier [and not a very good one], with very poor [no, terrible] half-tone photo images. Of course, we can always view the PDF file of the book, but that's not what we ordered, is it?

A lot of the material is very shallow: "When not using flash in dim light, you need to support the camera to prevent blur in your images. One way to do this is to lean against a wall or tree and brace yourself with your elbows . . . . . " ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz..........

As I investigated further, because this book looked like a cheap boiler-plate job applied to many different cameras, I discovered that my suspicions may be right -- he has "A Short Course to . . . " for what appears to me to be about 20 different cameras. I wonder how much of the material is identical in each of the books.

Of course, you may find this book to be delightful and informative. I didn't.

And, it costs as much as a ~real~ book . . .

1.0 out of 5 stars What a joke SAVE YOUR $ Read the manual, September 22, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: A Short Course in Nikon D70 Photography (book/ebook) (Spiral-bound)
This book is nothing more than a reiteration of the manual that comes with the camera. He does throw in some basic photo techiniques and information that anyone buying a $1000 would probably already know. For $35 your money would be more wisely spent on a book dedicated to photographic technique, or taking a basic class. It is a cheap photocopy on cheap paper. I cannot believe the author Dennis Curtain can foist this off as helpful information. I will never order anything from this author.

1.0 out of 5 stars Save your money!, November 7, 2004
This review is from: A Short Course in Nikon D70 Photography (book/ebook) (Spiral-bound)
If you want the examples and photos in this B&W book in color then you have to print out the book's 136 pages from the pdf file on the CD. Of course you pick up the costs in paper and ink and the wear and tear on your printer. WHAT A RIP OFF!!!!

A book about photography that doesn't even have color pictures? Please. At $35, I expected much more than this books provides. It is nothing more than a re-worded manual. In fact, if you understand the manual at all, then don't even bother with this book. Your money is better spent elsewhere, like on a new lens cap.

1.0 out of 5 stars Again - not worth the money..., April 20, 2005
This review is from: A Short Course in Nikon D70 Photography (book/ebook) (Spiral-bound)
This book is a total waste of time if you have the manual that came with the camera. Cheap quality + generic information = overpriced book. If you want to learn more - go with a reputable publisher or try a big mail order house like Adorama or B+H Photo. This guys's in it for a quick buck rehashing old material. It's akin to the Prentice-Hall series of books about opening your own "_____" business. The same generic information with a few specific detail thrown in to make it look like some thought was put into it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Rudimentary!, April 15, 2005
This review is from: A Short Course in Nikon D70 Photography (book/ebook) (Spiral-bound)
The D70's factory manual covers this exact same content to a better extent, and is actually a better read.

A very disappointing purchase, especially when considering the cover price.

There are better DSLR and D70 guides online for free!

If you can't open the box for the D70 then this manual is probably your speed.

Avoid.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, June 23, 2005
This review is from: A Short Course in Nikon D70 Photography (book/ebook) (Spiral-bound)
This, like other Dennis Curtin books, have way too much boilerplate "generic" information while not covering the specific camera sufficiently. There are e-books and other books out there that are far better. I do admire his ability to "get away with" publishing these books for this kind of money!

Most of this book is good for someone who has never taken a photograph with a digital camera. It is pretty useless for an experienced photographer that wants to learn the Nikon D70. The same information is on the quick start card, and easier to find.

This is nothing more than a variation on the instruction manual. A waste of money - I feel ripped off and its not worth returning because I live outside USA
