Book Description

March 29, 2006
Fiction. In this collection of 8 short fictions the author of A-GIN-PISSING-RAW-MEAT-DUEL-CARBURETOR-V8-SON-OF-A-BITCH FROM LOS ANGELES and CHUMP CHANGE gives "a running commentary on the truth behind Los Angeles's gleaming fa‡ade--a life of brief encounters, desperation, addiction and the chasm-sized distance between people. Dan Fante takes the traditional cab driver 'knowledge' to a deeper place fueled by raw emotion, wine-guzzling existentialism and fleetingly poetic epiphanies. Here, the City of Angels' halo has definitely slipped"--Time Out Magazine. The work of Dan Fante, son of author John Fante, has also been praised by John Fowles and likened to "the genius of Bukowski and Hubert Selby, JR."--Elle.

Today he lives in Venice, California with his tall wife Ayrin Leigh and a 2-year-old, blue-eyed son named Michelangelo Giovanni Fante.

3.0 out of 5 stars literary gem? probably not . . . but entertaining . . ., February 15, 2010

Fante doesn't raise the bar for short stories with this collection. Yes, they are well written, rich, and telling of his past . . . but mostly, they are entertaining.

4.0 out of 5 stars In his father's tradition, August 30, 2006

This review is from: Short Dog: Cab Driver Stories from the L. A. Streets (Paperback)
Dan Fante is a good writer and compulsively readable, like his gifted father, John, and like Bukowski and Celine. He is much darker than John Fante; there's almost no light at the end of the tunnel. He's been making his own mark in a trilogy of novels, and now in this collection of short stories. He's real, and he's haunting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fante is a genius, August 22, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Short Dog: Cab Driver Stories from the L. A. Streets (Paperback)
Dan Fante is one of the only authentic writers still producing great work in the US. He should by rights be the most famous writer in America.

Short Dog is an outstanding collection, and it seems that he is getting stronger with each successive book.

Do yourself a favour and read some Fante!
