4.0 out of 5 stars In his father's tradition
Dan Fante is a good writer and compulsively readable, like his gifted father, John, and like Bukowski and Celine. He is much darker than John Fante; there's almost no light at the end of the tunnel. He's been making his own mark in a trilogy of novels, and now in this collection of short stories. He's real, and he's haunting.

3.0 out of 5 stars literary gem? probably not . . . but entertaining . . .
Fante doesn't raise the bar for short stories with this collection. Yes, they are well written, rich, and telling of his past . . . but mostly, they are entertaining.

Dan Fante is one of the only authentic writers still producing great work in the US. He should by rights be the most famous writer in America.

Short Dog is an outstanding collection, and it seems that he is getting stronger with each successive book.

Do yourself a favour and read some Fante!

If you lived on the fringe then these stories will ring true. Fante captures the tone and pace of living on the edge better than anyone I've read in a long time. It took me back to my long dark drinking days at the "Nite Twain" in Las Vegas, and it was as if he had tossed back a few a places like this as well. He knows his stuff and I can't wait to read more!!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars far from his best..., November 27, 2009

There are some enjoyable stories in this but others are poorly written and overall I didn't believe it was worth the price I paid for it.

I love Dan Fante's work very much but was let down by this one.

SHORT DOG: CAB DRIVER STORIES FROM THE L.A. STREETS: Another great book by Dan Fante that should be read by everyone who enjoys an artist who paints beautiful pictures with his words. When you finish this book you want more and more and more of this fabulous author!
