Book Description

April 20, 1999
Tiger Woods' superb short game--imaginative, versatile, and based on rock-solid technical skills--has helped propel this exceptional young golfer to superstardom. In The Short Game Magic of Tiger Woods, John Andrisani, author of The Tiger Woods Way: An Analysis of Tiger Woods' Power-Swing Technique, shares his discovery of the secrets of Tiger's creative and winning short game to help golfers of all levels learn to lower their scores and improve their games.

Drawing from his independent study and analysis of Tiger Woods' game as well as from the insight of top teachers--including Claude "Butch" Harmon, Jr., Tiger's coach--and top pros such as Greg Norman, John Andrisani offers detailed, easy-to-follow instructions on the four elements of Tiger's outstanding short game:

Pitching Magic
Hitting on-target wedge shots and being imaginative are hallmarks of Tiger's flair for pitching.

Chipping Magic
Reading the lie correctly, knowing when to give the ball more air time than ground time, or vice versa, and alternating between a wristless and a wristy stroke are tactics used by Tiger for hitting the ball close to the cup.

Sand Play Magic
Knowing the right path to swing the club and how far to hit behind the ball are critical links to playing
both basic and more sophisticated sand shots like Tiger.

Putting Magic
Learning to emulate Tiger's pure pendulum stroke will help you sink more long, short, and curling putts.

Complete with full-color photographs of Tiger in action and detailed illustrations showing the key elements of his short game, along with commentaries by top professional golfers and instructors, The Short Game Magic of Tiger Woods will teach you how to play like a champion.

Amazon.com Review

Sure, it's the 300-plus-yard explosions that draw oohs and ahhs and envy from the gallery, but it's the soft touch around the putting surface that saves strokes and wins tournaments. When Woods is on, his short game is as good as it gets--accurate, deft, creative, even, as the title of Andrisani's analysis implies, magical; when he's not, he's just another grinder down the pack regardless of his awesome power and potential. Andrisani, collaborator on fine instructionals with Fred Couples and Butch Harmon, casts his seasoned eye on Woods's marvelous facility around the green in a slim volume packed with useful information, examination, technique, and drills. In clear, simple prose with accompanying pictures, he uses Woods as the model for pitching, chipping, sandplay, and putting-- starting with his preshot routines (reading lies, selecting clubs, and visualizing shots), and continuing with Woods's address of the ball and follow through. By deconstructing Tiger's technique, he aims to help you construct one that works for yourself. "There is no doubt that Tiger is a genius," Andrisani observes, "but he wasn't born a superb short game player. He built this talent through hard, imaginative practice." Andrisani's target--well hit--offers a foundation for going out and building your own. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

2.0 out of 5 stars WANT TO JOIN THE FAN CLUB?, February 28, 2004

D. McAllister "MRD" (Somewhere in the Field) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Short Game Magic of Tiger Woods: An Analysis of Tiger Woods' Pitching, Chipping, Sand Play, and Putting Technique s (Paperback)
I've been trying to figure John Andrisani out. My first look was THINK LIKE TIGER and now THE SHORT GAME MAGIC OF TIGER WOODS... Well I think I have finally pegged Mr. Andrisani: He's the unofficial president of the Tiger Woods fan club. Like THINK LIKE TIGER, SHORT GAME MAGIC is far too much about Andrisani's regard for his hero and nothing special when it comes to the subject: improving your short game.

Sure, the fundamentals are there but presented in the same way as of a variety of similar books by other golfers. The thing that you have to remember about Tiger is that his short game becomes moot because his long game makes it all possible. Whereas a pitch shot of any of us earth-bound mortals is 70 yards and in, For Tiger a pitch shot may be as long as 150 yards. HELLO!

Want a great book about the short game? Go with GETTING UP AND DOWN, the short game masterpiece by the undisputed king of the short game Tom Watson.

2.0 out of 5 stars golf short game by wood, May 12, 2007

check print date before buying. Tiger changed his swing completely after this book. Still a good value but a little dated.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sound Fundamentals and Advise, June 2, 2005
This review is from: The Short Game Magic of Tiger Woods: An Analysis of Tiger Woods' Pitching, Chipping, Sand Play, and Putting Technique s (Paperback)
Almost any golfer will agree that the `short game' is one of the most important parts of the game; if you hit a bad drive you can still recover, but if you miss a shot with your 8-iron or wedge, you've lost a stroke. Most golfers (even the pro's) would agree that Tiger Woods' short game is better than most, even those same pro's. This book isn't magically going to make you play like Tiger Woods next time you're out on the course, but it will give you a bit of insight on some good things to practice to help you improve your playing and lower your score. It does a good job describing why certain shots work the way they do, and where and how to use them effectively. There are four sections, pitching, chipping, sand, and putting, that explain several of the different types of shots that Tiger has been known to pull out of the bag and use in situations you might find yourself in next time you play. Each section includes several tips on how to handle bad situations and concludes with a set of suggested exercises for improving techniques relating to the chapter. Many of the situations, and even some of the shots, are fairly simple and/or commonplace, but they will all contribute to your developing a creative insight as to what you might be able to accomplish when you hit the ball yourself. Have you ever pitched over a building in the middle of a city, or putted on a gymnasium floor?

Whenever I watch a pro hitting a variety of pitch shots during a round of golf, I'm reminded of the late Louis Armstrong, who, just by blowing more gently or forcefully into his trumpet and hitting different valves with varying degrees of pressure, was able to produce hundreds of sounds. Read the first page
