Amazon.com Review

If your definition of "hike" is a grueling, 15-mile uphill march in a 40-pound pack, this isn't the book for you. But if the thought of meandering (with or without the kids) through some of California's most beautiful mountain country sounds appealing, then peruse the tantalizing options in this edition of Best Short Hikes. The authors offer a short introduction orienting the would-be stroller to the history, vegetation, and animals of the region, then get right down to business with 74 offerings--a menu of delectable choices for the "hungry, eager hiker." And what a rich and delicious array to choose from! Whether your bag is wetting a fishing line in a glassy alpine lake, wiggling your toes in a crystal stream, or craning your neck to look up at a grove of giant sequoias--or a little of each and then some--this guide shows the way. With plenty of maps, easy-to-follow directions, and a healthy dose of pointers (how to photograph one of those massive trees, where to see a bright palette of wildflowers, when to catch a glimpse of an elusive mule deer), you'll be quickly your way to experiencing some of the best short hiking in the north Sierras. Use this guide to plan for a single day hike or, taking advantage of information on nearby campgrounds, an extended stay.

I like the book, although I wish there was more of description of why I would want to go on each hike.

2.0 out of 5 stars Need in digital map format, January 21, 2011

This review is from: Best Short Hikes in California's Northern Sierra: A Guide to Day Hikes Near Campgrounds (Paperback)
I have the earlier edition of this book and it is one of the best paper written hiking books for the 80s and 90s.

However, it is 2011, I wish this author and others would start including a disc in their hiking books with the trails in Google Earth KML format, so people can view and mark/measure locations on the marked hikes. Would be easier to find and view listed parking areas, points of interest, drinking fountain/restroom locations, elevation changes, views from trail, streams, trail junctions, plants, lookouts, ranger stations, closed areas;etc.

Maybe the author could convert the whole book to KML format and just sell it as a KML downloadable file for the same price?
Could include a LOT more pictures and area information and links in the KML and there is NO publishing cost.

Something to consider. This is the digital age. You don't need to be a programmer to create a KML file. You don't need to make a app. Some Apps out there like MapBox that will load kml files.

Also, you can sell a Google Earth KML from your web site. You don't need to sell it on a app store and share the profits with publishers or app stores.
