This book provides enough detail on enough hikes to be very useful.

I bought this book because I was looking for short hikes for our family with elementary-aged children in all the titled Utah Nat'l parks. It does do a good job of describing the hikes in very great detail, how to get to the trail head, etc. Each hike is rated according to it's difficulty and child-friendliness and length of time to complete. This is all very good and helpful. However, I discovered after the fact that most of this same information is available on the National Park Service website and the brochure available for free at the visitor center, including some that aren't in the book.

I purchased this book prior to a trip to Zion and Bryce National Parks. I've read a number of hiking guides before and found this one particularly helpful. The author gives excellent details both on the difficulty of the hike and what you can expect to see. After hiking most of the trails in both parks, I can vouch for the accuracy of the guide and found the information very useful.

The sole drawback is the lack of color photos which would add far more impact to these descriptions. This is a common failing of this type of book but it a shortcoming even so.

I just returned from a trip to all 5 of Utah's national parks and this guide was indispensable. Since I had limited time in each park, I wanted to hike the best trails and be aware of what I was getting into. The temperature was often in the 90's and I felt comfortable choosing a trail that was doable in the heat. For instance, I hiked the Mesa Arch trail in 99° heat and knowing that the difficulty rating was a 1 (a short easy walk), elevation change was only 80' and average hiking time was 20-30 minutes and saw a lovely sight I would have otherwise probably skipped without the book. I enjoyed the descriptions as well, telling me what scenic mountain or canyon I was gazing upon.
I found it a very good trail companion.

I'm planning to visit Utah for the first time and wanted to use this book to scout hikes.

If you aren't planning to hike or prefer only written descriptions you might find this book more valuable than I did.

The book has a plethora of written information, but NO MAPS of the short hikes. I'm glad I pre-viewed this book at the Library.

Just a little sketch map of the road leading up to the trailhead, the general shape of the trail and intersections with other named trails for each hike would be very useful. See Best Hikes near Portland by Barstad for an example of maps with more than enough information for casual hiking.

We used this book as a reference to hike in several national parks in Utah, Arches, Canyonlands, Esclante, Capitol Reef, Bryce and Zion over a three week period. We are fairly capable physically but not risk taking hikers, however, we take hiking seriously when in the park. Once in the park, we discovered that our national park VISITOR CENTERS provide the EXCELLENT service of advising and describing trails. The friendly, trained and experienced park rangers and the explicit and informative materials provided at the visitor centers precluded the necessity of purchasing 50 Best Short Hikes in Utah's National Parks. In fact, because this book was heavy and proved to be superfluous, we left it behind. Don't waste your money on a book like this for these short hikes. If you need to do the research beforehand, spend the money ... Otherwise, go the visitor's center, meet a friendly park ranger who is as excited about the park as you are and ask him or her their favorite SHORT HIKE in their park - the human connection makes the trail come alive far more than a book.

I bought several hiking guides and general guide books and this was the one I found the most useful. There are so many great hikes in Utah it is hard to decide which ones to try. This book provides enough detail on enough hikes to be very useful. And they have already narrowed down the choices by limiting it to 50 hikes, so they are already wonderful. The information proved very useful in my opinion. [...]

This is a great book for anyone who likes short hikes in Utah's national parks. I love to hike; my husband doesn't like to hike over 3 miles. This book helps us find the hikes we'll both enjoy.
