This review is from: Short Order EP (Audio CD)
The Lab Rats make thrift shop hip hop: music that is as clever & critical as Bob Dylan in `64, as indie as vintage blue jeans and that checks your head like the Beastie Boys shopping for sneakers down at Paul's Boutique. The Lab Rats are experimenting in the science of your head bobbing to new music.

Brian Brown is real. He raps and plays guitar. His cool hasn't been seen since John Lennon or heard since Lou Reed. Not to mention he flows like a G-Love-loving Eminem and plays guitar like Dickie Betts riding with Joe Walsh and the James Gang. Brown's lyrical message is critical & satirical of a society that polishes those birthright silver spoons and empowers the less fortunate to merely dig a greasy one out of the dish tank and wash it. His rhymes diagnose personal & societal ills and prescribe not the cure, but the band aid. He doesn't pretend to know all the answers but he is wise enough to know that life's too short to ignore hope or the small pleasures. If funny and wise could ever rhyme, this working class hero would spit them in a line for his fans to both rock and awe to.

DJ KW, on the other hand, is practically a savant. This is a guy who only has to look at vinyl to beat-box it's inscription for you. He both makes and breaks beats. Inspired by the absurd and the abstract, KW is a multi-instrumentalist who can jam on the keys like Medeski or manufacture grooves like the Automator. This beat making, fun making DJ is just as happy to sit at home making booms & bips as he is to scratch records on stage in a crowded room. KW scratches vinyl like Angus Young riffs guitar: not the best there ever was, but plays exactly what you want at exactly the right time. Whether in the crowd or in the car, you will dig his cuts like they were dug out of your own head and encased in wax. KW loves technology and loves to get live at a show.

For obvious reasons, these guys are a big hit in their home town of Columbus, Ohio. It's not too often that you can find two people who are so different and still create such great chemistry. With the release of the Short Order EP, their experiments have out grown their home laboratory and have infected Columbus and beyond. They have already taken their experiment to the stages of NYC at the CMJ Music Marathon and are currently playing shows all around Ohio and the Midwest
