Product Description

Jenks and Hale aren't friends, partners, or ever next door neighbors anymore. Not since they each lost their jobs and had their homes foreclosed. Not since they lost their wives and kids and whatever stability they'd fought for in the world. Adrift on the streets of New York, Jenks' dark path seems to parallel Hale's step by step.

After Hale is found nearly dead beside the corpse of a nine-year-old girl, and soon after commits suicide in a mental hospital, Jenks decides to find out just what the hell happened. What happened to Hale and the girl, what happened to the wayward American Dream, and what happened to his youth and forfeited hopes.

Because whatever happens to Hale happens to Jenks just a few months later.

This review is from: Short Ride to Nowhere (Kindle Edition)
Another cool novella by my favorite author! This is a short story of a man's downward spiral after the loss of his home and family due to the recession. Living out of his car, he searches for answers as to what lead up to his neighbors demise. He is seemingly destined to take the same path.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brooding, powerful tale, August 16, 2010
This review is from: Short Ride to Nowhere (Kindle Edition)
After two men, Hale and Jenks, lose everything in the wake of the recent recession--"the new depression"--they wind up on the streets with nothing but each other and an unstable future of tarnished dreams and further failures to look forward to. When Hale is locked away for possibly murdering a child, and soon after commits suicide, Jenks investigates.

That's the simple synopsis to this whipsong novella, but it's hardly the full story. Tom Piccirilli brings his wit and penchant for atmospheric action to full use here, giving us a powerhouse piece of writing that you won't be able to put down. You can tell Piccirilli is giving us this story directly from his heart. It's full of realism and depth and gives voice to the fears that most of us can't. The terror of loss. The fear of failure.

This is an exciting action-packed thriller that hooks the audience from the git-go. Jenks begins his hunt for the truth--the truth of Hale's death and the truth of his own life--musing and never slowing down as the mystery tightens around him. The story line is fast-paced and never wavers as we glide into the anticipated final confrontation, which is a very different finale than you might expect.
