3.0 out of 5 stars Good start, but needs a bit of polish., March 8, 2011
This review is from: Short-Story.Me! Best Genre Short Stories #1 (Short-Story.Me! Best New Short Story Anthology) (Kindle Edition)
I was given this collection as a gift. These short stories are all on the www.short-story.me web e-zine. The stories on the website are free, so I'm not sure why you would purchase this anthology unless you are mother to one of the authors. Now, to be fair, if you just want/need a collection of short stories to read, and you have no internet access, then this anthology will fit those requirements. I found the stories within the range of bad cliches/puns to really interesting/good story telling. That often happens with anthologies. Unfortunately for this anthology, not many stood out as memorable or thought provoking.

You should go to the website, and read a few, and judge for yourself before you buy.

What I found most disappointing was this anthology lists two editors, but I cringed at what appeared to be a lack of editing throughout. Obvious punctuation, typo, and grammar boo-boo's, to really big element of fiction issues like; point of view slips, repeated words, telling, over use of the verb "to be", and characters doing a lot of "looking and sighing" throughout the story. I guess novice writers do these things, and that's okay, but I thought an "editor" helped a writer clean their writing up a bit before publishing. I'm not a professional writer, but I'm a voracious reader, and I know a good story, and some thoughtful editing, can make the whole thing work. For me it was distracting, (In one story most all the paragraphs started with "he" or "she") and took me right out of the "not as well written" stories.

It's a good start, some of the stories are entertaining, but overall as an anthology someone might pay money for, it needs some additional editorial polish.
