5.0 out of 5 stars Dogs + Treats = Business Success
This book is a quick read that held my interest from beginning to end. It's funny and has it's own unique charm. More importantly, however, is the business angle that is interwoven throughout the "tale" (the author's pun, not mine!). 2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting only if you want to start a similar firm
This book is mostly an entrepreneurial autobiograhy, interesting only if you want to start a similar firm or know the owners personally. The writing style is annoyingly self-congratulatory. There are only a handful of recipes. If you have a bit of baking skill, you can easily come up with better ones on your own. My dog and I received this book as a gift along with...

This book is a quick read that held my interest from beginning to end. It's funny and has it's own unique charm. More importantly, however, is the business angle that is interwoven throughout the "tale" (the author's pun, not mine!). This is the story of two guys and their three dogs who started a company on a shoestring and have grown it to a good-sized company. I bought a second copy to give to my brother, as inspiration, who is now starting his third entrepreneurial endeavor. I can't think of a reason why readers and their doggies would not immenseley enjoy this book. I rank this book 5 stars.

I saw a show on Food Network about the Three Dog Bakery and found out about their cookbook. I have 4 dogs, a sheltie, a toy pomeranian, a st.bernard/retriever mix, and a "heinz 57", they all love it when I spend the day in the kitchen cooking. My favorite form of relaxation !! There is an invisible line they do not cross between the dining room and the kitchen, so all 4 will sit at the line and wait for a treat... they don't really understand but now they get a lot more treats than before and it only took a couple of times with the new "doggie treat" jar for them to all sit, with tails wagging and tongues hanging out waiting for the dog friendly and healthy treats... The treats are easy to make, most of the ingredients are readily available in my kitchen and they store well... I collect cookbooks and this one has moved to a prominent place on the shelf...

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and Inspirational! An Only In America "Tail"!, January 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Short Tails and Treats from Three Dog Bakery (Paperback)
My wife brought home this book and loved it. Almost a year later, I picked it up, read it and could not put it down. This is the story of two dog lovers (and three dogs) who start a very unique business from their home and grow it to a national-sized chain. The book was written in a very humorous tone and I can see where any budding entrepreneur would find it a very inspirational story. I know we can speak from experience that our two dogs and our neighborhood dogs have thoroughly enjoyed the recipes that are sprinkled thoughout this book. I would rate this hilarious book 5 paws!

4.0 out of 5 stars A inspirational book for entrepreneurs with a few recipes, December 12, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Short Tails and Treats from Three Dog Bakery (Paperback)
If you are looking for a cookbook of just dog treats without verbage then you will have to look elsewhere. There are a total of 19 treat recipes in the book that range from simple frozen juice cubes that even the least talented cook can do through biscotti and candies suited for dogs. I do not find the ingredients of these recipes to be that far off other than the onions. Onions can cause anemia in small animals types and should be avoided, but in that particular recipe the onions can be simply omitted. If your dog has allergies to corn simply substitute rice flour for the cornmeal. As for allergies to wheat, there are a number of flours out that can be substituted, you just have to be an informed cook. Many of the dog biscuit recipes in books and out on the internet contain wheat, corn and in many cases large amounts of fat and salt.

The books main charm is as a "how we got very lucky and did it". They admit up front they got very lucky! On their own web page they state their book is about the history of their bakery for dogs. The book has many bad puns in it and the cartoons are very cute. However, there is quite a bit of reality here. Statements from the book like, "There was more than one occasion when the light at the end of the tunnel turned out to be the headlights of the Power and Light truck, coming to shut off our electricity." This is from two guys looking to build a business who were not afraid to work for what they wanted. And those of out here with dogs know what the dogs want, buscuits that don't look and smell like rocks! One of my dogs refused to eat bicuits for her former owners now happily looks forward to the biscuits I bake or buy because they actually taste like something.

All in all this book is not bad to purchase for the person wanting a springboard to making their own dog bicuits or treats and the budding dog biscuit entrepreneur will have a chance to see how someone else has "made it".

5.0 out of 5 stars Short Tails and Treats from Three Dog Bakery, March 27, 2000
This review is from: Short Tails and Treats from Three Dog Bakery (Paperback)
This is one of the most intersting books I have ever read. It is funny, entertaining, and educational. It provides wonderful insight into the world of starting a business that you love. It discusses all of the hard work, and all of the rewards that accompany it. Additionally, this book was absolutely hilarious. I loved the stories about the three dogs. I have not tried the recipes yet, but they look great.

There are only a handful of recipes. If you have a bit of baking skill, you can easily come up with better ones on your own. My dog and I received this book as a gift along with some treats from the Three Dog Bakery. The treats were great; the book is not. I wouldn't recommend it as a gift.

I love what these guys have done with the dog treat industry. This book had more of a story to it rather than just recipes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very highly recommended especially for entrepreneurs!, March 22, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Short Tails and Treats from Three Dog Bakery (Paperback)
This book is very highly recommended reading, especially for two groups of people worldwide: dog lovers, and those entrepreneurial spirits who aspire to be self-employed. Most people will enjoy this unique humorous story about the worrld's first bakery for dogs. The book contains 19 recipies which may sound delicious for humans, but are intended to be treats for dogs, such as "Great Danish Crunchies," "33rd St. Fiesta Bones," or "Pavlov's Punkin' Bread." In the book authors Dan Dye and Mark Beckloff describe their love for dogs. There are ample photos of their dogs, Dottie, Gracie, and Sarah, who help them taste test the dog treats. The book tries to be humorous in nature, but underneath the subtle humor, this book is a good educational read for any budding entrepreneur. There is a lot of seriousness to the business side of the book. The owners stress excellent customer service, and want to make the best natural dog treats available. Dog owners will love this very highly recommended book, and perhaps even try making some of the Three Dog Bakery recipies. Those not inclined to bake dog treats, and those who perhaps do not even own dogs, but want to start a business of their own, can enjoy reading this book and learn about the business principles employed by the owners of Three Dog Bakery, the authors of thsi very huighly recommended book.
