We used this guide to prep a team of high school students going to Peru. We assigned the chapters as homework, which they completed prior to a series of bi-weekly meetings, and we spent the meeting doing the processing activities and discussing the material Dearborn lays out. The students found it useful and memorable. I found it deep enough without getting mucky, and very user-friendly. I searched far and wide for a training resource for our students, and this was by far the best I encountered.
Note: the book is written to be used by Canadians and/or US Citizens. So when the book deals with cultural stereotypes, "We" is the US. Our group is neither, and some of the cultural stereotypes don't apply, but we were able to easily adapt the material to make it work and apply to our cultural context. It was also VERY easy to work with the publisher to get permission to translate this book so our kids could use it, which was nice, since most missions training materials are written for English speakers and don't have publicly-available translations.

Good for the Team,
This review is from: Short-Term Missions Workbook: From Mission Tourists to Global Citizens (Paperback)
This is a good leaders book for a STM team - if you're taking a team or you're sending a group from your church youth group then this book will help and is somthing to work through as a team before you depart.
In essence - if you go as a team, prepare as a team and you go to serve and to learn - you don't go with the attitude that you have all the answers. The book does not cover a lot of essential things on missions (what 2 pack and take, where 2 go etc.) but ackowledges it own limitations and recommends another book for these details. It assumes that the groups knows where its going. The book is coffee-table sized as its a workbook and so has room to write info. I was disapppinted that that only has about 1 Scripture per chapter - 8 off, which for a mission book is small. The book presumes that the leader will fill in the gaps and i hope they do! The books aim is for 16-18 ish simply beause it has roles plays in it and generally is focused on the church taking a youth team out, though inevitably there are universal points for those of any age. There are many good points in this book and any research is better than none and does pay dividends. Nice little book and website section at the end. Others missions book are: How to Plan, Prepare and Successfully Complete Your Short-Term Mission - For Volunteers, Churches, Independent STM Teams and Mission Organisations. The ... and those Planning a Christian Gap Year T and Mission Preparation Training - How to prepare for your short-term mission trip

this was a great tool that I used to prepare 4 college students who went to south america for a few weeks during the summer. I'm also using it now to help prepare longer term missionaries for brazil.

While I've been on many mission trips, this is the first time I have led one. I have a team of people, many of whom have never been on a mission trip. This book really helped me sort through what was important for our pre-trip training. It has great examples, activities & discussion topics. It is pretty deep and involves a large commitment by the mission trip participants, so I opted out of purchasing it for everyone and just got it for myself.
