Book Description

July 1, 2000
Short-Timers in Paradise is an eclectic collection of ten short stories, four essays and a play, all set in Hawaii. Many of the pieces are about surfing, and almost all involve outsiders and newcomers adjusting to life in the islands. The author employs several literary styles including comedy, satire, fantasy, realism and expressionism. The stories take place in Hawaii's past, present and future. Author and part-time Hawaii resident Paul Theroux writes, "Short-Timers in Paradise is 'local' in the best sense -- an observant insider's book about the fluidity of life in Hawaii, as well as a vivid gallery of its accidental inhabitants, from John Young the 19th Century castaway (who became a royal confidant), to surfers and scammers who arrived just the other day. What impresses me most about John Wythe White's book -- which comprises fiction, drama and essays -- is its understanding of the waterworld of Hawaii, and especially the art and science of surfing."

Editorial Reviews

Review

"In vivid, intimate and familiar details, White eloquently illustrates...what it means to live in Hawaii." -- Honolulu Star-Bulletin, August 18, 2000

"Like surfing, the sport of walking on water, this book too embodies the mystery and the glory of the islands." -- Paul Theroux

...White's knowledge of, and love for Hawai'i and its people runs deep. He's a pretty good surfer, too. -- Stu Dawrs, Editor, Honolulu Weekley

An enlightening read...The surfing theme is a thread throughout...A fine book to accompany you on a short trip. -- The Surfer's journal, Winter 2000, Volume 9 Number 5

One of the few well-written collections of surf-related stories available today. A very enjoyable read. -- Longboard Magazine, September/October 2000

This book is a collection of some real gems. I can identify with his "Confessions of an Againg Surfer." -- Peter Cole, legendary big wave rider and senior surfer
